Bunch of questions about Hypersonic EX7

Thread Starter
Hiya all

I am looking at buying a laptop to work as a travelling workstation, for 3d modelling and animation..

I have heard great things about Hypersonic, and am looking at the EX7 in particular..

Here are some specs I am thinking of:

2GB RAM
Quadro FX GO
2x 60GB 7200 RPM Drives
either 3.6Ghz P4 560, OR 3.4Ghz P4 650 (with EM64T)

I have a few questions though - regarding mainly whether to go 64 bit, and the screen resolutions..

I would be looking at using more than 2GB of RAM in these machines (I am buying a few of em..) in prolly 8months to a years time - and I know that regular machines don't really handle more than 2GB (or it is a waste putting more in)....
If I go 64Bit on this machine, is all 4GB (when I upgrade) used, or does the motherboard only really use 2.8GB for applications, and the rest for "hardware" ?

also - screen resolution..

I have never worked off a 17" laptop before and was wondering what screen res was best... Normally, I think higher is better - however, is 1900x1200 just too darn high-res to see stuff effectively? If anyone has experience that would be great

Cheers!

Matt

Sorry to tell you this, however, you will only be able to get a max of 2.8gb out of the system. Even with the upgrade to 64bit, Luke has mentioned that the newer model 9880s (still basically the EX7) are not able to handle above this. You can find this here.

I will have to defer the resolution to someone with good eyes. I have the 1680x1050 version, however, I am running it at 1280x960. The higher resolution for me just seems to make my eyes hurt. So I found a comfortable setting that did not distort everything. Mostly this is for text related reading. My laptop screen is about two feet from my face, thus my problem.

That aside, I believe for what you are trying to do, the Quadro FX is the way to go. Hypersonic also have the Fusion models that are desiged for CAD and graphics work as well. Take a look at that model.

Good luck!

I have a 17" WUXGA 1920x1200 display on my machine (LG/Philips), and it is a great display with 500:1 contrast ratio. It is a lot personal preference, but I would not trade this display away now for a 17" WXGA+ or WSXGA+. Of course, this is my own personal opinion since I love screen real estate and the extra crispness that the higher resolution provides.

As far as the Nvidia Quadro FX Go 1400 256MB GDDR3, it is pretty much the equivalent of the high-end Nvidia GeForce 6800 Go 256MB GDDR3. In fact, it is actually clocked the same. Of course, you get the OpenGL special features of the Quadro line and the advance OpenGL driver capabilities that Nvidia provides. If you do a search on the Internet for performance, a lot of the results are from the Dell Precision M70 that contains a DDR version of this card. The Quadro FX Go 1400 in the HyperSonic Aviator EX7 is faster due to the GDDR3 and higher clock rates.

As far as memory, this machine essentially supports ~3GB of memory which is better than 2GB of course. With the 4GB, ~1GB is reserved for hardware purposes by the Intel chipset. However, even if you go with the 2.8GB option, you will still want to get 4 modules (4x1GB or 2x1GB/2x512MB) so that you still get the dual channel benefits.

Also, there are just too many drivers missing to justify going to Windows x64 at the present time, not to mention stability and performance. Also, I love the TIVO like Media Center too much to give it up Also, Windows XP MCE 2005 IS Windows XP Pro with the domain function disabled due to Media Center Extenders needing Fast User Switching. However, there is a DLL modification to bring back this domain support...but now I am getting off topic...

I knew someone with the fondness of the high ers could give you a better idea. I had forgot all about you having the Quadro Dennis. Glad you stepped in.

I also ditto what he states about the 4 sticks of memory. I stuck with 2gb instead of going to the 3gb, and since I had already gone with 2x512, I complemented it with another 2x512. You will miss out on the dual-channel if you don't configure your memory in pairs.

It is so nice to see the HyperSonic section here now. In fact, it would be nice to see most brands have their own section. I hate having to thread through the Notebook General areas to find out information.

Since I also have an Aviator MX6, I still tend to go there as well since it is an Asus Z71V at its core, and there is no dedicated Asus section.

Actually, if you haven't noticed, Asus has their own section here now as well. The link to the Asus section is here.

I know what you mean. I have the EX7 for me. Then my wife has a Compaq 2100, my daughter has a Dell i8100 and I bought another one for my mom. Then I have an old KDS laptop laying around that I purchased right before I came here from the states. Helps to be able to get support from all of them.
