Dilema

Ok well here is my dilema: First of all I am in Iraq for about a year and wanted a good laptop to help pass the time. I have been waiting for the AMD/ATI laptop to come out, however last week I finally decided to bite the bullet and get the 9880. It is now paid for, and will be shipped to my home when I get there for R&R in a couple weeks. Well now I am reading that in early to mid-august the laptop I really want will be available. The problem is that I would have to have someone ship it out here to me instead of carrying it out myself. If you were in my shoes, what would you do, wait and have someone ship it here (and hope it isn't destroyed while being shipped) or just go with the 9880 I ordered (all the goodies). I am torn cause the AMD has so much more potential to be upgraded.

In my shoes, I would waiting. I would have whoever is shipping it to you repack it in one of those cases with hard plastic sides and foam inserts. Also, I would make sure someone runs a ton of benchmarks and burnin programs before it gets sent to you... by the time you get it the full refund option would have expired.

In your shoes, man... all you got to do is sit in the heat, get shot at and return fire; nights must be boring as hell over there. What if the thing is delayed? Playing Videogames on your down time would be great decompression therapy. I just couldn't imagine how hard it is to be there.

Another option could be to buy the cheapest thing you can find that could run "some" games and get your dream machine when you get back.

With all of the heat issues people have been talking about, would a 9880 in the desert heat be a good thing?

Either way, good luck, keep your head down and bring your ass back! God Bless man!

You are supposed to be fighting for our country and instead you're fighting to extend your internet reputation my talking shit on forums? Wow.

If you don't mind waiting, just wait. When the package arrives to be shipped to you just make sure it is fully insured against damage in transit.
Do you know how much shipping would run, and how long it would take to get to you after your friend shipped to you out there?

I would tend to agree with the concerns about heat in the desert. Might be better to get a P-M for now til you get home?

I would personally favor waiting, but I have no idea what it is like over there, its easy for me to wait... I got too much to do and not enough time as it is. Your situation may be very different.

As for the jerk 2 posts up, ignore him. I dont know what his problem is, but he IS an unfriendly cus. Most of us are very grateful to you fine gentlemen serving our country. You ROCK!

i c ro Y al takes a lot for granted it would appear.

As I remember, It is very hot during the day and cold at night and very, very dusty.

first of all, best of luck to you over in the dustbowl... stay safe and make it back to north america on this side of the ground.

as for the computer i dont think heat will be too bad, i have heard air conditioning is pretty common over there (not sure how true that is...) but if it is as common as i have heard you should be okay, the only worry being dust and regualr cleanings should solve that. if you want to game right now then stick with the 9880 if you want to hope that an amd is realesed in early august (without an official announcement at all) then you can choose to do that too.

the 9880 will be upgradebale to a new video card and the dual core p4's are supposed to be available as upgrades as well... so really i dont see a reason to not stick wiht what you have and know you are going to happily be gaming for a long time to come.

get the 9880. use the saved money to buy some freakin body armor, and humvee armor, so you can still use the damn laptop when your tour is over!

god, i wish the civilian leadership actually cared about the troops. good ol' rummy has really screwed the soldiers. sorry, for bringing politics in, but rumsfeld is a complete self-serving douche who is endangering heros.

Ya know, I always figured you were just misunderstood... but everyone else is right; you're just an asshole.

#1 - Not everyone is over there fighting, there are many "support" people.

#2 - Even those that fight, and I know many who are over there, do get down time. Keeping in touch with friends and family and keeping their minds off of killing people is very important to them.

#3 - You're just as asshole, do us all a favor and get a shotgun with a toe attachment and blow that miserable head off your body.

Well thank you all for the support, I guess I should explain a little better about my first post, I was here from May 03 to May 04 with the US Army as an Engineer. This time around I am here with KBR as a contractor, I really apologize for the confusion as I did not want to make is sound like I was here this time as a soldier. I should have been more clear about it I guess. As for heat and dust, I am in Mosul where it is not that dusty and I am in AC all the time. KBR has definately raised the standard of living for the soldiers (heck we just opened up a pool on this base!) and I am glad to be apart of that (wish they were here when I was haha). Thank you all for your answers also, still trying to decide. . .

You could get a 9300 for around $1250, and then sell it when you get back and get the dual core amd notebook when you get back, I dont think you'd lose more than a couple hundred dollars selling it used, and you'd have a capable notebook while you are there. I I was trying to wait for dual core machines to come out, but needed something for school with good graphics, decent battery life and a low price, this was the only machine that fit the bill and wasn't 6+ months away.

You people seem to be the biggest bunch of Nerds, geeks, dorks, and losers, yet you have no clue what the **** you are talking about. It's really a sad sight. I don't come to this forum to make friends, I have plenty of Non-Imaginary friends in my real life so I don't feel the need to have this huge reputation as a know-it-all dork on the internet. To those of you who do, you are all sad and depraved. Rotorhead pointed out he wasn't clear, and the only reason I posted that was because him and his little buddy amsterdam or some shit are always jumping on my nuts about stupid shit when I'm not being friendly to their arrogant remarks.

And neither do assholes like Rotorhead and ambitdouche. All I was doing in the beggining was asnwering and asking questions and they start talking shit, well guess what, I'm going to finish it, or make their experience as shitty as possible. Have a Nice Day!

Cause you actually think anything you post has any bearing in my life . . . I think the lack of intelligence in your posts is quite amusing actually, so you probably need to do a better job of ruining my experience here haha, good luck in that.

I'd go with the 9880 now, and wait until next year for the new AMD books to be reviewed and put through their paces... yea they'll probably be "better", but not all that much more. And really, there's nothing a 9880 can't handle.

Then, once you see Alienware and Voodoo getting of their lazy arses and releasing their rebranded versions of the AMD, pop your 9880 on ebay and recoup a couple g's and put that toward your newer laptop.

That is an ideal, although I really don't want to buy yet another laptop again in a year, which is the reason I am wanting to get the AMD, cause I know that will support the dualcore processors of the future and all i really would need to upgrade is the processor and vid card. I think I have pretty much made up my mind over the last couple days. I think I am going to wait (I wanted the 100GB 7200 HD's also) and have the AMD/ATI shipped out to me. Now I just need to call PCTorque up and let them know!

I'm sure if you ask and pay alittle more Luke could get it packed in a tougher box. Even an ice cooler could be used to give the laptop a bit more protection.

Can anyone send troops something, I thought at one time only family or charities could due to the fear of bombs/anthrax being sent.

Anyone can send troops things, the PO is supposed to check the boxes, before you send them, for contraban, but I don't think they do. There is a list somewhere of people that have little to no family for people to send stuff to, one of my soldiers got his name put on that list somehow and he got about 5 big boxes every couple days full of junk food, candy, magazines, wetwipes, soap, shampoo, etc, etc, fortunately we were able to give it to people that needed it and to the iraqis when we were out and about.
