Cleaning out 9100 fans?

Thread Starter
The fans in my notebook have been running on medium at almost all times lately... and it's been a little while since I did anything about it but I figured this time I'd clean them out as thoroughly as possible. Could anyone describe which screws to remove to make it easiest to clean out whatever dust has been building up all this time?

See the thread below (terrible gaming performance thread) but to summarize flip your laptop over and remove the two fans nearest the hinges (2 screws each). One will pull out easily while the other one (where the headphone jacks are located) requires you to remove one more screw (maybe 2...looks like I was missing a screw) and pull up on that metal hinged bar). I had tons of dust built up in the metal thingies next to the fan (you'll see what I mean). You can wipe most of the big stuff off and blow off the rest. Do the same for the fans.

Just cleaning those 2 made a difference for me (i.e. the fans ran quieter). The third fan requires removing the keyboard; if you've installed the MR9800 video card, then you know what to do. If not, get ready to pry off some plastic! (check the dell support site for the manual for the 9100...or check the link in the thread below).

You can click the link in my sig, I tried making a complete walkthrough last summer, It's helped some people. 3rd fan isn't hard to get to at all, just a lot of screws.

yes, I was able to successfully get to the cpu fan F1 yesterday, first time I have ever taken apart my laptop like that and it was no problem, just have to make sure you keep track of what you're doing and move carefully

Run dell diagnostics on them to see if they're running they way they're supposed to. In addition to wiping the blades you might want to oil the fan a little.
