I9300 Mods

Thread Starter
Has anyone done any of the mods in the "Mods Sticky" under the Dell General section to there I9300?

I m just curious as I am thinking about painting the case and installing some LEDs as well as maybe one of the custom badges. I just wanted to know if anyone else had done any of them and if they had any advice.

Otherwise, I am going to go ahead and do a few of them and make turtorials.

I was also wondering if anyone would be interested in listing them as turtorials somwhere.

I am painting my 9300 glossy black with stainless steel accents on the lid. Also I have done the LED mod and am trying to cram a 3.5" HD inside, or at least another 2.5".

Cool. Was that using the solder pads on the mobo or using some other power source (like USB)?

1- did you take your laptop apart to do the paint mod? I want to get a finish as nice as the owner of the laptop got his, however I'm not sure I can spare that much time without my laptop. I was thinkin about just tapin the heck out of it and then doin all the work. Just can't make up my mind.

2- Where are you putting this HDD???? I want to know. Tell me where your thinking about stashing it, where you got it, and how much you think it'll take of batt time.

3- What kind of switch are you using for the LEDs? I am lookin for something that is completely out of the way so I don't lose and functionality you know?

I think he prolly used USB power like that guy in the turtorial did.

Sorry for the late reply.

1. Yes, I took it apart and it takes a long time and lots of dedication. However I did it part by part so I could use the laptop most of the time. When I had to I plugged it into an external monitor/keyboard/mouse so I was always able to use it.

2.Anywhere, I'm pretty sure that I can fit another 2.5" if i remove the PCMCIA slot. I don't have any idea of what the battery drop would be like.

3. Yeah right now I'm on USB power, still hoping for an onboard solution. I don't have a hardware switch but if I want to go mobile I'll just disable the USB in device manager. (Haven't actually treid yet)

Does each USB port have its own supply or is it all shared between them? Because if each has its own then I wouldn't mind dedicating one or two USB ports for some LEDs USB ports supply 5 V right?

Each has its own. So you can turn off the power to the LEDs by disabling the port. Note that you can still use that usb port for something else while the LEDs are on.

Well you could, but just not anything bus powered... Besides right now I only use 1 USB port for my mouse, 2 when I plug in the External HDD. I dont know how I would use four mas!

I'd like to see you mount it. If you want an additional internal storage you can put a usb thumb drive inside and attach it to the back of the usb pins.

I'm not sure about this. Many have done Spiike's led mod but none have reported this. My guess is that you could since the led mod only splits the power and leaves the data pins alone so that you can still use an low powered device such as an led mouse with the LEDs on.

If I can't mount it as a slave I'll just mount it on USB.

Reaver, I was also looking to paint the white trim on my 9300, please let us know how that goes / how you went about doing it.

Update me on this when you do some testing. I've had trouble when I put two hard drives (not on i9300) on the same IDE channel - wouldn't recognize either one even if there was only one on the cable.

I basically just used the painting tutorial in the 'Dell Mods' thread. If you want to change the color of the trim on the top of the 9300 I would suggest sanding it down to a nice brushed steel look, although you can't do this for the trim at the front.
