ati drivers on the 4880 X700

I have been trying to get the damn ati drivers to work with the X700 on the 4800. This has been the biggest headache...VESA works fine, and X runs fine, just cant reallly do any 3D accel (which is fine for me). However it really pisses me off that I can't get the ATI drivers to work. I was wondering if anyone has successfully gotten the ati drivers to work on their 4880. Please share, as I have run out of kernel modules/fglrxconfig/xorg.conf options with which to tweak. I guess you can share horror stories as well, but I was just curious if anyone has got the ati drivers to work on their 4880. Thanks

Can't really guess ...

I'm looking for someone that has set it up correctly to see if anyone has done it. When I run 'X -config /root/xorg.conf' my screen comes up black, and locks the computer (ctl alt backspace or ctl alt del dont work). I have to manually reboot. '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' shows no errors (EE). I have tried using LDPS, AUTO for the LCD, i have tried kernel agp/ati driver agp (i know the card is pci-e but some people said it wouldnt run with apg support). I have tried modules/installed in the kernel. I have tried altering the ChipID. I have tried different ModeLines. Everything gives the same result. When i switch back to vesa drivers with 'opengl-update xorg-x11' and then 'X -configure' and then 'startx' X windows comes up great. I was just curious if anyone has gotten them to work yet with the 4880

Thanks for your informative relply Now does anyone have anything relevant to our situation to say?

yeah it works but you have to turn on pci-e in the kernel. Once you do that the rest is as is for any ati driver setup. Also make sure you load the pci-e for the kernel in the kernel or as a module (if as a module then make sure it's in the /etc/modules.autoload/kernel2.6 to load on boot.

Could I load it as a module now, and then run the driver install? Whats the module called?

What version of Linux you running?

I have tried compiling PCI-e support into the kernel and loading it as a module. Neither worked with the ati drivers. Still the same locked black screen. I don't know what is up. I had issues with the older omega drivers in windows as well. Anyways, still looking for someone with a 4880 that has gotten them to work.

Have you looked in the Gentoo Forums?

I'm leaving work now, so i'll check when i get home and let you guys know for sure, but I think lspci is detecting my card as the desktop version(rv45 or something similar), because the 4880 has 256 megs of memory, rather than the standard 128. Would this have any issues with us being able to use x? Should we specify the correct chipid, and if so, what is it?

I have posted on the Gentoo forums, and a member of the Gentoo forums created a very indepth ATI LINUX guide that is constantly updated. As of now, the creater of this guide doesnt know what's up on the M400A. So I guess we can just sit and wait.

[EDIT]
Here is the link: http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/g...adeon-faq.html
It is real indepth for anyone without an M400A that needs help getting ati-drivers to work.

Ive gotten a little bit farther than I normally have. Normally, I'd get a "no screens found" error returned by X, but now my screen blanks and I have to ctrl-alt-backspace out of it. Sometimes I cant even do that and have to do a hard reset. This seems similar to others who have mentioned blank screens, though others have said they just lose backlight. Ive looked very close and I cant see any picture, so I think im losing picture all together, not just backlight.

Lets keep messing with this.
