Hi Everybody! (Me again!)

Just wondering when my Laptop is on Idle it runs 1-9% and sometimes 0% (for about 5 or 10 seconds) Is this normal? If not, please tell me how to fix it! Thanks

Thanks,
Thanks in Advance!

what's wrong with 1-9%? 9% might be a little high, depending on what type of background stuff you have running, and whether you have speedstep/powernow running.

yeah that is the thing. its background programs, 9% is a bit high but it depends on how much of the background stuff you run.

if you are concerned just see what process(s) are using CPU time. 0-4% is ok, 9% seems high, but check to see what they are. Things like antivirus and antispyware programs and software firewalls may continually write to logs causing CPU activity. Moving your mouse causes CPU activity, as does AIM. Just click on the CPU tab in task manager and watch what does it.

very true... good advice to know.

what are you running in terms of anti-virus and anti-spyware programs? and others at the time you are getting 4-9% usage... are you using stardock or any other windows skinning programs because those are really huge system hogs.

Could I Disable all items in msconfig

Could I Disable all items in msconfig!

I would not turn off your antivirus, antispyware items...let them load on startup

Is it O.K?...

Is it ok to untick (in msconfig) all the ones that are stopped? E.G

mine is 5-15% usage. System Idle Process is always humming along.

I never get down to zero%

Would'nt that wear down the processor and last a shorter time?

Yeh, but can I disable all the stopped Items in msconfig?
if the particular windows service is already stopped I would not think it would be a running process then, so nothing to really stop or disable in msconfig, if i am understanding you correctly.

Your orig question was CPU usage at idle, again, see what is chewing up idle CPU cycles, most cases it is some app or apps runnings in the background... and then determine if they are important or not...now,, if you are concerned about memory usage from running processes, that is a different story. Just disable all the unnecessay stuff in startup, and don\'t worry too much about windows processes (unless your system is infected with malware). Memory is cheap.
