I highly recommend MPlayer to those who have slower machine. http://www.mplayerhq.hu

It can play most video formats out there and doesn't require any codec installation!

You can get the RealAlternative codec, which comes with the third-party program called Media Player Classic (loosely based on WMP 6.4). It has all you need for video playing, believe me.

Without any of the hassle on top of that.

Startup Managers – Extremely handy for making sure your system has all of the available resources it needs to perform at its best. Can also decrease boot time substantially.
I need help with this progam. I downloaded it and installed it, but i cant find it anywhere. I cant even find it in the control panel where i can uninstall programs.

Edit: Nevermind. I found out.

I would like to recommend K-Lite Codecpack, It has the quicktime codecs and real player codecs. No need to install those at all! It includes Media Player Classic!

With regards to firewall, i'd recommend Kerio personal firewall over Zonealarm... Kerio is a bit more instensive to set up, but it's free.

Unlocker is a good addon to windows when you get this message everytime you try to delete something:

"cannot delete folder:It is being used by another person or program. close any programs that might be using the file and try again"

it is free and you get it here

I almost forgot about "konfabulator", it allows you to run "widgets" on the desktop. Widgets are very good utilities with lots of different uses (rss feeds, alarm clocks, webcams viewers, desktop photos...........lots of stuffs).

First install "konfabulator" it is free now and you get it here

Then you download the widgets from the same site.....look at the widget gallery and download whichever you find useful and run them with konfabulator.

Do not miss this....they are great.

I believe the software you listed up there covered all the bases.
But I think you should include some ultilities programs, such as O&O Defrag 2000 Free and some Registry "scrubbing" software.

Jealous people. C'mon, you can be an über-smart l33t computer user, but this is far from horrible. I've found it to be very useful.

Windows Updates. In that process I would install Microsoft Update and let it do it's thing. Even after it installs all the updates, run it again until it says you are current.

Also, if you have an external hard drive or a bunch of blank dvds, NORTON GHOST! Creates a snapshot of your laptop's hard drive so if you want to reformat, you just reload from your image disk instead of going through all those steps.
