Building my own desk top....

I apoligize in advance if this has been gone over before, but I am a little stumped on which power supply to use for my case. I plan on running 4-6 fans (80mm) in a case with probably just a cdrw drive, floppy or zip, all with a p4 2.8gh. I am looking at a 420 watt supply. Is this adequate??? Any help is appreciated as I am new to building my own desktop. Also any general suggestions are welcome.

yea a 420 should do it for you since fans really dont take up that much power. the video card is what sucks up a lot of the power.

Don't forget to factor in your hard drives and video card. The higher end cards now draw a lot more power. Assuming one HD 420 watt powersupply will be fine for what you described as long as you get a good one and. Many cheep PS manufacturers will use peak watts instead of RMS to make their supply look a lot better than it really is. I recommend using one of the Antec True power supplies or an equivalently rated manufacturer.

Good Luck,

You'll be fine with a good quality 400 watt unit. My system has a generic 400watt unit and it puts out very good/stable voltages.

See my sig for specs. I also have 8 extra 80mm fans I added/modded to my case running of the same PS.

While the Antec power supplies are great. I'm very content with the 450 watt Colorcases powersupply I got. My system runs very stable.

As far as the hard drive is concerned...it is going to be 120gig 7200 speed. The video card I have not figured out yet but should be either the 9800 pro or the nvidia fx (the newest one). I found a case that incorporates 6 fans and a 420watt power supply. This is it below....

Does anyone have any negative or positive feed back for where I am heading? Thanks for the replies so far.

Congrats, you've picked out a great case. It's very spacious and seems to have adequate cooling options.

As was stated earlier by TheComputerRoom, sometimes generic PSU's can be iffy.....a name brand PSU is never a bad idea. I would also suggest an Antec Truepower PSU. However, if you're pressed for money, the 420w psu in this case should do nicely.

Good luck on the building process!

Yah, keep us all informed. Take pictures, do a diary. There is never enough information like this out there, especially from ordinary folks.

The computer revolution won't really start until kindergarten kids are writing programs and grandmas are building the computers to run them on.

Thats pretty nice looking case you have there.

Next time, I'm going to build a more understated system myself. This one can be annoying at night, even with the lights shut off, the LED fans are annoying.
