So did you just apply or have you tested yet?
Every police department will offer a civil service test. You must take this to even be remotely considered. Generally if you have military experience (DD214 with Honorable) you get an extra 5%-20%.
I have tested with 4 departments, soon to be 5.
My civil results
Department A (84%) Large Department
Department B (79%) Small Department
Department C (93%) Small Department
Department D (79%) Large Department
Out of all of these I am still in the process with department A. I have done everything besides the polygraph and I am awaiting a polygraph date. They will ask you fin stuff like have you ever looked at child pornography, or ever had sex with animals. A question I hated was "List all undetected/undocumented crimes you have EVER committed". If you lie once on a poly your basically done. They are looking for integrity. About 2000 applied for 40 positions with this department.
Department B the cutoff was 80%, missed it by a question. About 200 applied for 2 positions.
With department C, I scored high but they offered 20% for military. The highest score was now a 119%. I did not make the top 50, in fact I was number 53. 300 tested here for 3 positions.
Department D I am ranked at 79 so have very little chance of moving on. 800 tested here for an unknown amount of positions.
IF you make it though all of the steps (Civil service exam, physical ability, oral board, polygraph, physc exam, then medical exam), you get placed on whats called a civil service eligibility list. The Chief/Sheriff will pick its recruits from this list. The list is generally good for 1-2 years so you may get a call anytime in that period, especially with smaller departments.
If you really want it then go out and get it. There are only a few reasons I would tell you do not try, and this is coming from the sergeants that I talk to. If you have ever used anything besides marijuana and prescription medication (in which its prescribed to YOU), if you have a felony, if you have ever committed a crime of violence, even if undetected, if you have 6 or more points on you license, bankruptcy recently or very bad credit, or if you have ever sold drugs or been a part of drug trafficking I then its not looking good. If its a credit, bankruptcy, or points on your license that is the problem then wait a few years. If its any of the other then with most departments there is no chance. Besides this, KEEP trying and with numerous departments. You will find that you have seen people test with other departments and will get to know them as you keep meeting at tests.
I am in the same boat you are about to be in. As for now, it sucks, but in the end it will be worth it. I would get a good book on testing tips for civil service exams. There are some really good ones and they have practice tests in them. Some tests you take are easy and will have correct answers to every question, most tests you take will be comprised of mostly judgment questions which suck. For example,
Would you rather,
A - Have a job that is reliable with a steady income.
B - Have a job that you enjoy.
C - Cannot decide.
This types of questions were what department B's test was primarily made of. How in the hell are you supposed to answer that?
Okay, to the rest of DRT sorry for rambling!

Good luck SM
