So really, it doesn't matter what you get nowadays; if you want to watch a little tv, with the odd sports or informative show, you're going to be paying at least $100 a month, all told. Add some nice installation fees, and high taxes on everything, and it looks like I'm going to be using rabbit ears for a long time to come.

And another observation: why is it that playboy tv always requires a movies package subscription? You're talking a good $40 a month, just to get that one channel. Are people really that desperate? It's the same with every provider. Must be a licensing/mandated thing?
It's called smart (lousy) content packaging Garb

At least here we have the option to buy the box right out from the start or paying rental for 24 months - this rental is better I think since they would upgrade when new models come out for free with no higher cost. €3 a month for me. Basic IPTV with extra normal channels put me back another €4 a month. Next step is €14 a month with loads of extra stuff. Then of course they give us a free movie each week via their HD content or €2 a pop for others in their library.

Sounded like scam over there for sure, here too many regulations for the providers to skate

You have the option to buy the box as well... costs $500. €4 a month would be a steal over here for the basic service. The absolute lowest is $24 ($27 if you forget to tell them you don't need timeshifting). Add another $5-10 for made-up fees, and tax, and you're looking at a bare minimum of $40, even if you buy your own box. And it's the same for all providers here. Yes, the big 3 (Bell, Rogers, Telus) has a stranglehold on the entire country, and aside from not using their service (and putting up with cheaper solutions, in every sense of the word), there is nothing we can do about it.

So, Canada is a great place to live, if your plans include living without any contact to the outside world (media and telecommunications)

Government employees seem to get 10x as many "holidays" as the rest of us. They'll take every day they can.

Meanwhile, it looks like my boxing day will be pushed into January again. And with most my department away, it looks like I'll also be putting in lots of overtime on the Christmas week.

Let's hear it for working OT on Christmas Eve!

Wow! We can get these box 2nd hand here for cheap. I decided to go with rental due to automatic firmware/software updates plus new models when they are being made available.

Currently paying €41 for everything here (flat telephony Europe including mobile within ISP covered areas and households, flat internet, IPTV standard 70 free channels, rental box)

I might think twice about moving back now

I bought all my equipment for Bell Sat, Probably spent about 2K on the 4 receivers I have.

problem also is even I decided to swtich to say Shaw Sat, which is about 20.00 cheaper a month, i would have to buy all the equipment over again.

Rental box is $20 a month (HDPVR), with extra non-PVR boxes at $5 a month. The typical TV+Internet+Cell bundle is about$150-200 a month, so yes, Europe is MILES better than anything over here.

Meh. Any OT is time and a half, but I just dislike having to get so stressed out before (and after) Xmas. My department knows they can't have more than one person away at a time... which is why 3 of them decided to be off at the same time
