whats the price of diesel there ? ( per litres) Would you be better off with a hybird like the Toyota Prius ?
Diesel is around a pound per litre (1.82 dollars), two or three pence more than petrol.

Although popular in the US, the hybrids aren't actually as great as they're made out - the zero emissions are very impressive certainly but a good diesel engine is more fuel efficient (mine certainly is) but furthermore diesel engines produce a lot more torque, even my relatively low power diesel engine produces twice as much torque as a Prius. Also, you get a far better choice of cars with diesels and although they can't match the zero emissions of a Prius, they do have lower emissions than an equivalent petrol engine.

Our prices have always been high here for fuel, but hurricane Katrina has pushed them up further and apparently they still have further to go

Those were the days when diesel *was* cheaper than petrol. Yeah, the Prius is a hot seller here in LA with the lower emission, very few diesel mobiles around here. Surprised to hear the oil companies over there use Katrina as an excuse to price gouge...pr*cks. Yeah, the UK, like Australia, charges a huge tax on the petrol sold which is why its way more expense than what we pay here in the US.

Thats because california emmisiisons are so strict most manufactures dont want to modify their diesel engines and so they dont sell diesel version in california. Example: Jetta diesel, you cant buy in California directly from a dealer. There are ways to get one but it takes effort.
