Damage modelling has been confirmed in the new game. As far as I understand it they've already released a teaser but without the damage. Like I say it wouldn't surprise me if the entire understructure of the car, axles, gearbox, engine, panel points are all accurately modelled. If it isn't that good they may well have a failure on their hands.
Interesting to read what you said on the earlier versions. I lot of people agree that the handling in GT3 was better than GT4, however you couldn't do certain car acrobatics acurately. The AI in both games was attrocious but particularly bad GT4, that really needs to be worked on.
Anyway, guess we'll have to wait and see...
