Where to buy?

This may sound like a very anal question but as I work in retail I know sometimes the length products are kept before sold. My question is where would you rather buy a powerbook from, apple store online or drive to the closesest apple store (about a hour) and get one from there? Only reason I asked is because my friend just bought a new compaq from a store and its battery seemed to be shot so he had to have a replacement shipped to him and I would hate something like that to happen to me. Thanks for all your input, try not to call me anal too much

I'd buy from either. At least if the battery dies as soon as you get it you can run down to the Apple store and get an instant replacement.

If I had a choice definitely from an Apple Retail Store. If you have any stuck or dead pixels on the display or if anything else is wrong with it out of the box it's much easier just to exchange it at the store.

if u want a stock machine, buy from amazon. their rebates beat out the academic pricing from apple as they (apple) charge tax. also, amazon has a basic 30-day return policy w/ no mention of a restocking fee as apple does. if u did get some dead pixels the return would likely be soomther than w/ apple. if u want extra features like a larger drive or bluetooth, u'll have to go thru apple. and yes, if u buy from amazon and your battery is lame, u can just go to the apple store and get a new one. doesn't matter where u buy it from, the warranty is w/ apple. so if u want a stock machine, i'd just go for the lowest price (as well as the easiest return policy).

here is a deal though, make sure its an Athorized Apple Reseller, because its the only way apple will honor the warranty (amazon is an AAR). If you just buy it from "somewhere" then they won't take the warranty.

know that from the experience of my high school english teacher:
her son bought his dad an ipod from some online store that wasn't an AAR. There was a malfunction in the pod, and apple would not accept it for repairs/exchange because the store was not an AAR

Thats a good point, I hate that the apple store charges tax. If I bought from amazon I could save 50 bucks but im figuring since it is amazon and not apple itself that it probably comes with panther instead of tiger, which to upgrade would cost 70$ alone. Ill look around for a reseller that states it comes with tiger. Thanks guys!

If it comes from Amazon—Amazon itself, not a seller—it should have Tiger on it. If not, since you bought it after Tiger was released Apple should send you a copy for 9.99.
