The XPS Gen2 scored a 11030 for the 3d mark, the 03 version.

The one at 5k is the 05 version?

yes, you can change it, but you will loose your warranty, AFAIK.

The hard drive is a Seagate Momentus 5400 RPM 100Gig drive.

Yes you can replace the hd with any notebook sized hard drive.

How would you compare the ATI Radeon X700 to the nvidia go 6600?

This is a sweet looking system for the price and has me very interested.

Have you tried using anything like AutoCad or PSpice on it?

How about MMOs like EQ2 or COH, how does it stand up to a long play session?

Anyway if the electronics match the look and the stat's seem to imply they do, then man, Im sold at least for now. We will see what happens by Aug when I get to buy mine.

You may have read my post..

I'm back on my z71v right now but I can assure you, the Acer Ferrari has the same screen (probably the same manufacturer). Both screens have the "sparkle" (not it's not reeeeeeally a sparkle per se. It looks more like htere's a plastic sheen to the lcd that you can see when looking at whites and greys).

I have heard that the z70v does not have it but until I see it for myself, I won't know for sure.

The Acer is a damn nice machine, anybody who buys it, IMO, will be happy with it.

hey, could you post the compare link for the 3d mark score?
I hope that ripping off that g4y a$$ M$ sticker doesn't void the warranty
post #32 of 152
Good scores on the Ferrari stock. When I got my 8103 I got around 5800 stock. When I OCed I ran just about 50 points off 7000.
this is a aquamark score of the 8104 with msn and all that acer crap that loadings at start in the background
no over clocking no nothing
all stock

I was able to get my copy of HL2 last night ant take the Ferrari out for some gaming. The installation and registration via Steam too a while so I didn't get to play much before bed.

In short it looked great on the screen and the play was smooth. Disappointment came in using the Bluetooth Ferrari mouse. Moving around with the Bluetooth mouse was choppy and inaccurate. Basically unplayable. I resorted to using a USB optical mouse I had and that fixed the problem. It's really a shame too since the Ferrari mouse look pretty cool.

Heat and Noise: Playing the game definitely pushes the Ferrari. The fan kicked up a notch when the game started and the palm rest became warm.

In about 30 minutes of game play, the hottest part of the Ferrari was the area just under the 'Alt' and Windows key. The Next hottest part is the left side of the laptop where the fan vents are.

The fan seems to have three settings that i can notice. One when the computer is idle (fan is always running), second when i started up HL2
and full throttle after 30 min into the game. It was definitely moving air at that point.

I went out of the game and the fan dropped back to Idle speed. I then ran RMClock and undervolted my MAX voltage from 1.5V to 1.35V to see if it would make a difference. I started up HL2 again and after some more gaming, the fan only reached the 2 level and never went to full throttle.

I'll get some more gaming and testing done over the weekend. But so far I’m pretty happy with the Ferrari. There isn't really any problem with the fan and it seems to be working the way it should.

As for the heat, It's just a mild complaint for me. And I am picky about heat. Excessive heat is a deal breaker for me. I returned the Mayhem G3 I bought from ABS because of too much heat and the Ferrari is an ice cube compared to that.

Wow would of expected the Ferrari to beat the 8104 score since it has the Turion.
the bluetooth mouse is wierd

when i first started using it it seemed really choppy and hard to use too... but now I use it for battlefield 2 and it seems perfectly fine... i dont know if i got used to using it correctly or if it somehow got smoother

it's been said that aquamark3 favours Pentiums... since the Turion should win.

Undervolting:
In order to have a cooler system at peek performance and extend the battery life I played around with the RMClock utility to adjust the CPU voltages at Max and Min settings. I followed the undervolting guide written by OSPrime found here: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=80394

After stress testing with Prime95 the stable voltage settings that I found were: .950V at 800Mhz and 1.325V at 2Ghz. I have noticed a difference when playing HL2 with these settings. The fans on the Ferrari take a much longer time to turn up to full speed. I still have to test the affect on battery life though.

You have to remember that the stock F4000 comes with DDR333 RAM instead of DDR400, which most people who get the F400 say they are going to upgrade to.

That definitely makes a difference in those scores.

Perhaps. Perhaps that's the case. I'm just getting a little bit suspicious now since all of the reviews that have been done between the Turion and the Pentium M, the Pentium M has won in performance however someone always calls out biased or cheating. Even with private tests like this - aquamark scores, the Pentium M wins. However there's always something or someone who says that the test was biased, or something was wrong. If that is the case though it's not like it matters too much - they both perform around the same level and it's just minor gaps in performance that people are squabbling about.
