Rustican's Review: Acer Ferrari 4000 - Page 3

I agree completely JFvergara

People just face it the Pentium M is Better in terms of performance and battery life & power consumption than the Turion

Turion is just a rebranded & tweaked Low Voltage Version of their Athlon64 3000+ 2.0Ghz processor. Keep in mind that Pentium M edges out the Turion slightly.

Its like comparing apples to apples. Like ATI versus nVidia, Wow you can get a slightly better score in 3D Mark or whatever, In terms of real world performance you would not even notice the difference

Point : Turion and Pentium are both good processors offering comparable performance

Just ordered my Acer Ferrari 4005

Can't wait till' Monday

Rustican... I'm having a problem with my Ferrari.

After a few minutes (maybe half an hour) of playing a game my laptop overheats and reboots itself. I'm just wondering if you've had this problem...

I don't have my Ferrari 4000 yet but I've experienced this issue when I owned a Ferrari 3400. The GPU would overheat and the computer would reboot itself. Also it would would even just shut itself off.

This is during only when I played game for some time. I've experienced the same issue with other laptops. Happenned rarely though for me pretty non-existent.

I would suggest lowering screen resolution [GPU has less stress]

Try putting your voltage settings back to normal and see if it still happens [highly recommend to try this]

I don't think anything is wrong with your unit, matter of settings, I could be wrong

No i have not experienced this and i have just finished playing 2 hours of Half Life at high settings. My fan didn't even turn to full speed.

Please note that I have undervolted my CPU. Also i elevated the back of my laptop with a book for better ventalation on the bottom.

The palm rests did get warm and the mouse pad is hot to the touch. The hottest part of the laptop right now is the area below the 'Alt' key at the left of the keyboard.

The Ferrari is running ok for me. And no reboots at all.
what are the pro's of undervolting ur cpu?
less heat and noise and more battery time

there may be a stability issue while running games though... i took of the undervolting and the above problem seems fixed... i dunno... i had thoroughly tested with Prime95 but maybe it's not intensize enough like some games.
are there any cons of undervolting other than the obove stated possibility of unstabability?
Quick question techn9ne the pictures you took of your Ferrari, the shot of the lid

Is that the natural glossy finish of the lid or the plastic protective material is comes with when it is shipped?

You can alway try upping the voltage a little and see if that fixes your stability issues. So far my settings are running good and i've been running Half Life 2 with problems what so ever.

Not all CPU's will be stable at the same voltages some require liss voltage some require more. Finding the right settings is a matter or trial and error.

I'm a little confused if undervolting the CPU increases battery life and decreases heat and noise while maintaining the same performance wouldn't Acer opt to do so?

From Acer Website, What tools does the Ferrari 4005 include?

Owners does it include ePowerManagement? What about GridVista?

Acer eManager, comprised of three tools** , blends commonly-used settings into one simple interface, so using your notebook is easier than ever:

Acer eSetting : makes selecting system settings easy
Acer ePresentation : simplifies resolution settings when connecting to a projector
Acer ePowerManagement : allows flexibility in choosing intelligent power schemes

Use your notebook most resourcefully - with least effort!

* SmartCard available only on selected models.
** Tools included vary depending on configuration
post #53 of 152
it comes with gridvista... i dont see epowermanagement anywhere

the processor is not already set at the lower voltage because they set it at a voltage that they are sure will be stable for all models of that processor

Nice review!

Regarding the undervolting again: Are you sure that a 0.950V VID is the lowest setting you can run at a 4.0x FID? The low-power Mobile Athlon 64 in the Acer Ferrari 3200/3400 could easily run a 0.800V VID at 4.0x FID, so I'd expected that the Turion 64 would at least match that. And at max FID, the VID didn't exceed 1.200V for the low-power Mobile Athlon 64 so your 1.350V VID for the Turion 64 seems awfully high to me.

Try installing all the latest optimized drivers, especially processor, chipset & display drivers, and you should be able to get a nice boost in the benchmarks.

Thanks Snorre!

I'm still refining my numbers for the undervolting. I'm not really sure the voltages are higher on the Turion. It just may be the chip i have or something to do with the addes instructions and diffrent transistors in the Turion series. I'm still testing to find stable settings.

On another note, while playing Half Life 2 i reached the 'Water Hazard' part of the game. The view looked amazing but on the large open areas when the action started happening, the Ferrari started to stutter becoming completely unplayable. At one point is froze and i had to restart the computer. Oh a hunch i installed the latest Omega Drivers for the video card. The stuttering stopped and gameing resumed. I'll see how things go from here but things are looking well.
the lowest voltages for my CPU are .95 minumum and 1.325 maximum... for whatever reason setting RMClock to Automatic Management so it switches between the voltage settings causes my computer to crash.

Tech, we'd really like you to run SuperPi at 1 and 2 million. It only takes ~ 3 minutes, and snorre & I are having a discussion about the Turion......
Here's the SuperPi results:
1M- 48s
2M- 1m 51s
Are you sure that there was nothing running in the background? I suppose that the big cache of the Pentium M may be enough to help it a lot on the benchmark, but even my 1.86 GHz Pentium M can beat those.

1.35V Vcore is the standard max. value for the 35W Turion64 ML series processors. The 25W MT series Turion64 processors have only a standard max. Vcore of 1.2V.

You can look at the following table for max. Vcore values of different AMD processors:
