Rustican's Review: Acer Ferrari 4000 - Page 4

Rustican did you say you did some battery conditioning? I thought Li batts don't need any conditioning....

I also agree with what you said about the bluetooth mouse earlier. It is pretty choppy so im prob going to get a mx518 to use and play games. The bluetooth will be nice to use when im on the move though. Any way you know of to turn it off? I would like to conserve its batteries for when i need it.

Yeah. I ran it several times to make sure. I'd never run it before this, but after skimming Pentium M results it does seem low.

No i did not do any battery conditioning. Lithium Ion doesn't need it contratrary to popular belief. I ended up ditching the Ferrari mouse entirely. It's justnot responsive enough for my taste. It's a shame really since it matches the laptop so well.

hey scubasteve, To turn my Ferrari mouse off I just flip the battery around and leave it in the mouse, that way you don't lose the batteries and also it is turned off...The mouse is pretty sucky, its cool that I bought me a Logitech bluetooth mx900 last month...it works perfect for gaming!
Can you use the MX900 with the built-in bluetooth or do you need to use Logitech's hub?

Try raising your voltages and see if you still crash. It might need more overhead when you put it in Automatic mode.

What was the Turion CPU speed, and at what RAM speeds?

UPDATE:
Using Mobile Meter I was able to get the temps of the CPU and Hard Drive while the Ferrari is idle. It runs pretty cool.

Also i ran a second battery test.

Battery Test 2 – Power settings were ‘portable/laptop’ Everything stock configuration, no undervolting. Screen half dimmed. Test consisted of just causal web browsing and typing. The Ferrari lasted for 3 and ½ hours.

RMCLOCK Update:
I've been experiending some lock ups with RMClock lately while running off battery. I'm investigating it now to see what the issue is. For now i've adjusted my profile to allow for no managment while in battery mode.

when i was getting those lock ups i was running off of AC not battery.

That's odd since my lock ups happened in battery. My AC seems pretty stable. I'll keep stressing the notebook to see if i can get it to lock up in AC.

For me the keybord doesn't feel mushy. It's got a good feel to it when typing and i'm a touch typist. The curve of the keyboard doesn't bother me either. There's nothing much to get use to.

As for the mouse it takes AA battries. But i think the mouse is the biggest failing of the Ferrari 400. It feels sluggish when you use it and unuseable in gameing. At least for me.

do the keys on your keyboard rock back on forth if you move your finger over a key, or is that just my keyboard. I hate it that my keys click if I am just resting my fingers on the keyboard and move them a little bit.

Yes they do slightly. It doesn't really bother me though.

UPDATE:
Just an update after using the Ferrari for about 2 weeks now. I haven’t had any problems yet with the build of the laptop and everything has been working in perfect order. Hope is stays that way. (*knock on wood)

It’s been able to handle everything that I’ve thrown at it so far from browsing the web and to 4 hour sessions of Guild Wars and Half Life 2. Though I recommend getting a laptop cooler. Battery life gives a consistent 3 hours with regular web browsing and e-mail checking. I’ve also burned cd’s and DVDs with the optical slot loading drive with no problems or bad burns. Overall the Ferrari has met my expectations of being solid and reliable. I’ll see if this opinion holds up as time goes on.

Temps after hard gaming?

Can you do us the favor of playing Half-Life 2 for 2 or more hours and then give us the mobo-meter temps? Im interested in exactly how hot this thing can get.

Thanks

I had mine up to 72C while playing steam CounterStrike. I guess it also depends much on the room temperature.

Highest I've ever seen was 74 after like 5 or 6 hours of Battlefield 2. I'm considering buying a Vantec LapCool 3 for like $25 CDN.
