UPDATE.

Been using my Ferrari for a month now and it works like a charm. One problem has come up though. It seems that i'm wearing off the finish on my keyboard. Already on my space bar there is a smooth patch from where my thumbs keep pressing down on it.

I don't bang on my keys but i am a touch typist and do type pretty fast. Just wanted to let you all know.

Aside from the wear the Keyboard is working fine and has no other problems.

No, my lock up issues are gone. I had problems before because i didn't changethe windows power settings. I had my still set to notebook/laptop. I Switched it to Always On and now it's running fine. My curent voltages are 9.50V Min and 1.325 Max.

The Ferrari 4000 is definitely competative for price/performance. It has a nice low voltage Turion processor to compete with the PM/Centrino as well as a ATI x700 128Mb video card that can play today's games with out a problem. And it's also a 64 bit chip ready for future applications. Then add the 100G HD and 1G RAM and it's a nice all around package. Unfortunately the blue tooth mouse isn't that great. But over all i would say you get what you pay for, which is an excellent laptop.

UPDATE:

Well i just came back from vacation which i took my Ferrari 4005 on. Took a flight down to Florida for some R&R. While passing through the security checkpoints of the airport i had to take the laptop to out of the case and pass it through the X-rap machine. No worries, the X-rays won't damage the laptop or the information on the HD.

Use it while waiting for my flight and another guy with a Dell notebook came up to me complementing me on the looks of the Ferrari and asking me where i had gotten it from. He never heard of Acer before and i showed him the specs and what the Ferrari could do up close. By the time my flight started boarding the guy was ready to order a Ferrari for himself.

On vacation with a bunch of friends, everyone had a camera and were taking pictures galore. The memory card reader worked like a charm as i compled all the pictures from all their cameras be is Memory stick, or SD cards. Then i burned a DVD for everyone when it was time to go home.

I was complimented a few more times while on my trip on the looks of the Ferrari. Few people heard of Acer before but all left with a good impression of what the Ferrari was about.

To date the Ferrari 4005 has done everything i expected it too. It provided solid performance in a mobile package. I definitely didn't want to have to lug around a 17" notebook through check points in the airport and have to cram it under an airplane seat. I'm definitely happy with my purchase and hope my experiences help others make buying decisions in the future.

I am a Acer fan all the way, I have been for a couple of years. The only laptop brand I buy because of their constant innovation, unique features and willingless to produce notebooks with the newest technology.

I've owned three top of the line Acer and all of them I was more than satisfied with.

I love me new Acer Ferrari 4000 is everything I wanted it to be. I was waiting for a widescreen Ferrari and it arrived.

Everyone I talk to has never even heard of Acer brand, when I tell them they have no idea.

Acer to me on their top of the line notebooks produce quality and top notch build. With the notebooks tuned for performance, no extra crap to slow it down.

Glad you happy w/ your Ferrari Rustican as I am. I have to mine out of my house yet or dorm. Lid looks like it would get strached easily. Have you gotten any or noticed any marks on your lid?

I wanna keep mine look clear as a mirror. I wish they put a clear plastic cover over it in the package.

Nope no marks or scratches on the lid (knock on wood) Everything is still like new. I'm pretty careful with my computer though. It's definitely an eye catcher where ever i go with it. The only let down about buying this laptop is that i'll be envious of the people who pick up an Acer Ferrari 6000 in the future

Great review Rustican! Another question regarding heat - how comfortable is your laptop when placed on bare skin (ie, it's sitting on your lap while you wear shorts). How hot does it get that way when playing games?

Since I'm writting this with the laptop directly on my skin (since I wear shorts) it is very comfortable IF you don't play games. But when the X700 start to run at full speed it start to be hot under the touchpad. Not enough to burn your skin, but enough to be uncomfortable.

Nice, review Rustican. My F4005 finaly arrives last week. The people of Acer this time really do some improvements in this machine. Lots of changes and solid stricture plus the X700, the best ati video card of market. This notebook has 9 of 10.
In comparative with my previous F3400, this machine is an ice cube.
Maybe 1 o 2 hs more of battery life for 10/10, is the only fault.
Bye people.

For me fan noise from my Ferrari 4000 is a problem. I think it's too loud, even on the first level. The fan starts spinning right away from cold start, even though it should not be necessary.
If possible I would like to be able to stop or make the fan run slower.
Is it possible to control the fan in some way?
Anybody have any suggestions or ideas?

The noise is not a problem for me, no it is not silent but nor is it irritarting and I'm pretty anal about these kind of things. I had a Thinkpad T43p for a short while and if you want to hear noise you should have heard the Thinkpad, it was obnoxious. I can honestly say that of all the notebook PC's I've had the Ferrari 4005 is by far the best and most enjoyable I've used. As a matter of fact I enjoy it so much I don't feel the need to upgrade at all and thats a first for me. Rarely do I find a product that completely satisfies me, and if anyone would have told me the just about perfect notebook computer would come from Acer I would have said they were crazy.

I can echo that sentiment from the Acer 8104's perspective. Perfect machine. The x700 and 2GHz processor, along with a 100GB 5400RPM HD makes for a great balance in this very portable machine. Even though they're now coming out with a dual core, practically identical machine, I prefer the single and battery power I can get from this. Acer had a good combo when they came out with the Ferrari and 8100 notebooks.

UPDATE:
Using Mobile Meter I was able to get the temps of the CPU and Hard Drive while the Ferrari is idle. It runs pretty cool.

Sorry for the question, but how can software determine how hot a system is running? IMWTK
