Acer Ferrari 4000

Hello, I am considering getting a 4000 laptop.

Just a couple of questions:

How is the sound? Is an Audigy 2 option available in the laptop?
More of a general question: How do AMD Tur (Mobile Processor?) laptops perform in games?

Is the the AMD Tur (I assume comparable to the Intel Centrino) and X700 combo a good combo to play half life 2 and/or doom3?

Is there greater performance in games or in genreral when a x700mobility is combined with a Pentium 4 for example?

Yes I would say the Ferrari 4000 is the most complete, futuresafe and portable quallity gaming notebook yet. There is faster and bigger ones but they all come with compromises and drawbacks. Either they are huge, 32 bit only, no battery life etc, while the Ferrari 4000 on the other hand has it all.

If you want better battery life, get the 8104. Otherwise, the 2 laptop will perform about the same. As for futuresafe, I'll be on my next laptop (or the one after) way before 64bit applications and games becomes standard.

An Audigy 2 sound solution is avaliable in the form of a PCMCIA card sold by Sound blaster. LINK
Note that the Ferrari only has one PCMCIA card slot so if you have no other uses for it the sound card add on isn't a problem.

As for gameing, AMD has done well edging Intel out of the performance crown over the past years. But the performance difrences are minimal and it's dependant on the videocard.

I have still to get down to serious gameing on my Ferrari but running benchmarks has shown that the Ferrari is a good gamer. My 3Dmark 2003 score of 6039 is pretty good beating most 8104 scores. But real world apps are the most important.

I agree with Wiz33. If battery life is the most important thing to you, and eeking out every last volt from your battery defines your existence, then get a PM laptop.

If not then the Ferrari 4000 offers, an excellent 64bit cpu (wether you need it or not), NX bit protection to better ward off viruses, a unique look that's fairly cool, and a price that around $100 less than the 8104 that's similary configured. Not too shabby.

Oh and they even threw in a diaper rag to wipe finger prints off the carbon fiber lid. You can't forget the diaper rag.
