I just wanted to share my initial impressions of my new acer 1692wlmi (price: 2100 NZD ~ 1500 USD) . I initially wanted the Acer 8103/4, but it was difficult to find in NZ/Australia and far more expensive than in the US (4000-5000 NZD), so I decided to get this model as it was cheaper than the 8104 and had most of the features I was looking for.
After reading about Meaker's and others' luck in overclocking the Acer 1690 series, I decided to try setfsb, and now have my 1.73 ghz running at 2.0 ghz (154 FSB) 100% stable (I could have pushed it further, but am happy with this for now...)
3d mark2005 @ 2ghz (ati 5.6/2.2 mob mod): 2617. (with x700 NOT overclocked)
I was surprised to see that this is as good as most of the 8103/8104 scores, so I'm pretty impressed, considering how much cheaper it is. Every game I have thrown at it has run beautifully and the cpu temp has not gone over 65C.
The crystalbrite screen is very nice, as is the general build. I would highly recommend this laptop to anyone wanting something similar to but cheaper than the 8103/4 series. Be advised that there are things it does not have compared to the 8103/4's:
4200 vs 5400 rpm, 256 in two slots (pain for upgrade), 1280x800 vs 1650 x 1080, no dvi, slightly larger, XP home vs XP Pro, shorter warranty
