Replacing DVD burner in 8790

It's finally died: doesn't even recognize a blank DVD when inserted. I'm wondering if anyone has ever replaced their internal DVD burner on their own, particularly in an 8790 (but if you've done it on another make/model let me know how your experience was). I'm also looking for suggestions on reliable source for an internal laptop DVD burner, preferably with Lightscribe, besides PCTorque - I just want some options. Thanks.

Have you looked in the instruction manual? How long have you had it, it may be available to be replaced for free if less then a year old..

Call David Liu; he can take care of you.

It's out of warranty. Who is David Liu?

David is a Tech Rep at Sager.

Open the cover that has the small fan on it. It's the memory compartment. Then locate the corner of the DVD and gently push it out with a blunt object such as a pencil. I upgraded my 8790's DVD with a NEC 6500A. I wrote a detailed post regarding the media that it's compatable with and such in the Sager General Section. You might want to check that out.

To install the DVD, just pop it in. Push back until it can go no further. The Power/ATA interface will hold it in place.

Good luck.

Thanks, I didn't realize it was so simple, however in order to be reimbursed by Warrantech I'll have to drive it down to Sager and have them do it. Maybe they can just do it while I wait...

They have been know to do that for equipment in warranty. David is a good contact.

What is the drive that Sager is using with lightscribe in it? I can't seem to find any slim DVD burners that have it. Going to upgrade my CD-RW to a DVD-RW and lightscribe is for sure something I want to get when I do.

Don't know for sure; however, this is a likely candidate:
