Question on the 9880 sager

Now i now you can put in 4gb of ram into the 9880 sager, but how much does it really reads?

i see in many places that it will only read around 2.5gb of ram, is this true?

what about if i put in 4gb of ram with windows xp 64 bit, would it read 4gb of ram?

Does anyone has this laptop running at 4gb of ram, or is there a bios update in the near future for this??

Please someone let me know.

Thank You

The chipset used in the 9860, and its more recent variant, the 9880, have been confirmed to not be able to address more than 2.8GBs of RAM, sadly.

Fortunately, that should be more than most people need, and much more RAM than that tends to be more towards the realm of workstation desktops and server farms.

but there is no way to get this up even with windows xp 64bit?

would there be a bios update for this machine in the near future which will allow it?

I have been told that a BIOS update was released last week that will allow all of the 4GB to be addressed. If you see me posting a review next week it worked....if not it will be RMAd in less than 24 hours

It is a physical limitation, you will never be able to use 4 gb with the 915P chip, no matter what OS, no matter what BIOS.

Yes, I read the sticky.

I found someone who said they had it working, and I gave it a shot. If it does not work I am sending it back and getting inline for the AMD dual core version .

I took the shot because I desperatly need the 4GB in a portable or SFF. To date I have yet to find anything that will fit my needs. I have found 2GB SO-DIMMs but they are DDR2 which means no AMD chips they also cost $1700 a SO-DIMM. Since most intel machines are 915 based then they would not work either.

Got any good ideas on how to solve this conundrum

It's limited by the chipset, so ever go above 2.83 on the current mobo is a no go. As far as the D900k machine is concerned, it does not look like 4gb of mem will work in it either, but then again specs are not finished yet.

Any word on an Intel dual core Clevo 900? Or is the thermal load to high?

What could possible use over 2.8 Gigs of RAM anyway?

*Austin Powers* I mean, Honestly!

I run a modeling program that can and would run a LOT faster with it.

I agree. Looks like autocad and studio max will just have to settle for my measly 2 gigs

Does anyone put 3GB into a D900T? It seems that that would be closest to optimal

i put 3gb in my d900t. 2x313+2x1gb and all works fine

I very seriously doubt it that you will see the difference between 2.8GB and 4GB memory doing this. I would like to see some proof of this...

There is very little that I am sure about in this 4gb debate, but I am very sure that 4gb will improve performance. Graphics is actually secondary to the work that I do. The primary part of this modeling work requires that large problems have memory specified and if the memory is not available the program aborts.
