Ferrari 4000 vs. Travelmate 8104 - conclusion? - Page 3

Ferrari 4005 bought - and returned!

Thanks for all your great answers to my original post, this was really nice!
– Now I can also add some firsthand information on the subject:

Yesterday I purchased the Ferrari 4005wlmi, and I was really impressed by the build quality and visual appearance. But as soon as I plugged it in and turned it on, I realized that this was not the laptop for me. The idle fan noise was simply too much!

…Afterwards I really tried to convince myself, that it was something I could live with, but each time I rebooted the machine, and the fan turned off, it was a relief!
As I plan to use it for programming and office applications as well as gaming this is really unacceptable!

For now I don’t know what to buy instead, because it seems like the Travelmate 8100 series also has this high level constant fan noise!
Maybe a HP nw8240 could be a good and more quiet alternative?

have you tried to set an automatic management of the frequency ? so, if you don't need power, the frequency stays to minimal, and you have few heat!

To me, the HP nw8240 looks ugly and old. If you don't care about looks though, seems to be a pretty decent machine.

But I agree. I've read on here that you can decrease voltage and keep the fan off a lot more. I hope to only have my fan on loud when gaming.

Well I tried setting the power scheme to "max saving" (translated from Danish, don't know if it's called that in WinXP UK), which results in an 800 MHz CPU speed among other things. Furthermore I tried adjusting the X700 to conserve power in its control panel, and I didn't run any applications for an hour!
Even though this was done in a room with an ambient temperature below 20 degrees centigrade, this did not result in any fan slowdown or shutdown.

BTW: Playing games makes the fan speed up even more of course...

you can try to use RMClock 1.5. it's a freeware, and you can set minimal fid & vid and maximal fid & vid, then you can decide if run to minimal, maximal or automatic management. so you are sure about your frequency! infact I think that winzozz profile are not the best way! then you can easily play mobile meter to monitoring temperature of cpu & hd, and control your frequency.

with RMClock you can put down your voltages, so your notebook has a minor heat

I must admit that I was also a bit disapointed about the fan noise on the Ferrari 4005WLMi. But then again my old Dell Inspiron 4100 is more noisy when its fans are on, so it is not a deal-breaker. Would be nice if it was possible to turn down the RPM's of the fan even more. Since it is nice and cool running without load (mine runs at 37C idle) I don't see why Acer didn't decrease the noise further. Wonder if some clever hackers could come up with a speedfan hack for the Ferrari 4005Wlmi

According to this review the HP 8240 also has a noise problem :http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...ighlight=noise

I don't know where you took that. In the noise section, I say that the fan noise is comfortable at the idle level. Noise and heat aren''t really big issues with this computer, although they are there.

You should also try unplugging the adaptor, apparently the fan turns much less if the laptop works on battery

I would also characterize the fan of the F4000 as pretty silent and comfortable, but that is a subjective oppinion. Since the 8240 "only" gets 8/10 I assumed from your review that the sound was a bit of a problem.

Well, I don't give high grades very easily.

My 8104 is adequate with regard to fan noise. Bear in mind that my previous laptop was a zd7000 with a 3Ghz desktop P4. Its fan noise was horrendous. Compared to it the 8104 is "effectively" silent. But when playing games (2Ghz speed full GPU), the fan is on full speed constantly, and when comes on far more than I like even during simple use (800Mhz speed, power reduced GPU).

IMO, the single heatpipe and fan servicing the cpu, chipset and gpu is not adequate to keep the temps below 45C even during light usage, and I would assume that the Ferrari 4K has the exact same limitations.

My ferrari 4000 is normally at 37-40C during normal use. Is the cooling system the same or does the ferrari run at higher RPM or have bigger heatsink ?
Wouldnt some sort of a laptop cooler help with this problem?
Taelvin: What problem?? - We're discussing noise here - the heat it self is not a problem - any external cooler will not decrease noise only make it worse (since it the laptop cooler also makes noise). This is at least the case for the ferrari where the fans are not turned off even though the temperature is below 35C. - And who would want to drag a laptop cooler around with you all the time?

I know I would not have any problem with fan noice, I even think my Sager 4750 (A64 DTR 81.5w) runs quiet when the fans are at full blast and I don't think the Ferrari 4000 would be louder than that. I would just be happy they didn't sacrifice performance and good quallity cooling for minimal noice reduction, but that's just me... Sure if fans irritates you then you might want to look into a fanless notebook or an LV PM 1.0GHz notebook might suite you better too.

"Noise and heat aren''t really big issues with this computer, although they are there." is exactly how I would descibe my 8103. People on this board are nuts when it comes to their laptops making any kind of noise at all. If they can here the slightest occasional tick or whir, its apparantly too much noise for their fragile little ears.

Show me a notebook comparable to the Ferrari 4005 with the same Spec.
2.0 GHz Turion, 128MB X700, 100GB, 1GB RAM, 15.4 Wide Screen TFT LCD

If that notebook's fan has less noise the Ferrari 4005 then people have a reason to complain. Until then I don't see the point of comparing other notebooks fan/heat against the Ferrari 4005. Your comparing Apples to Oranges.

I agree, this thing is quiet as hell you have to put your ear by the fan to hear it. The sound is very nice if you ask me.. the way they trick your ears with the sound coming out the front 3 dimensionally is pretty cool. It is what it is though.. a laptop not a boom box.

If you want it to run quieter during normal applications I.E. Word, Internet Exp or Excel change your AC power scheme to use less cpu. It helps keep keep the laptop cooler too. I don't see perfomance degradition when I surf the web when I use my low cpu power scheme.
