Dell installed Wrong & Unorder Software

Dell stalled symantec nis, which i did NOT order since they charge for it and i have it and mcaffe. and dell installed aol instead of earthlink. I think that they are rushing orders out the door because my order was ordered tues; at tenn or nc (?) on fri and arrive mon. even though when ordered it gave a shipping date of 15 days.

It has a skewed keyboard, too.

I think I understood like 5 words out of that whole statement....

They gave you the wrong software cause you got the laptop earlier than expect? My laptop came with both aol and earthlink along with mcafee and symantec software. I than just chose what I wanted and the other was uninstalled.

Also what is a "skewed" keyboard?

spreak engrish prease. Dell installs lots of extra software. remove what you don't want. If the keyboard is off angle remove the screws and straighten it.

Damn, I must of been half asleep when I typed that or its the cramped 700m keyboard.

Dell installed symantec norton internet security, which I did not order because they charged extra for it and I have new copies of mcafee and symantec nsw premier. I ordered earthlink, but they installed crappy aol. So, I got a free copy of nis.

Skewed means it is crooked. Like when you hang a painting and it is not level, but it tills to one side...i.e., skewed.

I surmise that the order was rushed due to all the mistakes.

i would be willing to bet that they are all just trial versions and not the full software..every new computer from dell comes with it..just reformat and be done with it..

on the other hand, why do you still have the computer, from the sound of your last few threads you are not too happy with it(700m) or dell...???

every dell laptop, regardless of what you pick, comes with norton and 90 days of virus definitions. You pay to get a year of definitions when you pick it from the dell site.

If you check the 700m order page, then you will see that there is an option for no security software. Which is what I selected. Other dell models have different options. I like free stuff.

I don't know if it is trialware, because I have activated it, but there is no messages stating that it is trialware. Also, order form doesn't mention trialware. I have 21 days to return, so why not try it out?

That's why a reformat helps best to get rid of crap like that.

Maybe it is the other way around, mistakes due to a rushed order.

Anyway, a good format is probably needed.

the software packages like NIS and McAffee are both 90 days trial ware...i think it tells you about the time limit when you register with the prospective company to activate it for updates/support....

i found out about it when i registered and deleted it immediately before i got used to it and liked too much to not purchase it after the 90 days

you get a crapload with your dell purchase, if you don't like it like everyone else just format. I got a bunch of stuff i didn't even heard before.

just a question? I have always been a fan of reformating my new computers and installing what I wanted and how I wanted. but my freind, a computer tech guy, said that I should just use the uninstall utility to remove the programs i don't want and that a reformat is not needed unless you want to waste time. also he said that when dell installs windows that it configures to the system, and if i reformat that it will be set to default options thus my compture won't run to it's full potential... Any thoughts on this or should I just reformat and not worry about anything...

your thoughts on reformating are welcome.

thank you

To clarify, I bought McAfee and Symantec NSW Premier at Compusa and used rebates, so that they were free and that is why I did not select to buy security software from Dell, which save me $ on my configuration.

I'm usually to lazy to reformat and install tons of software and spend the time it takes. But, I guess, reformatting gives you a cleaner registry. Because when you "just" uninstall software, the process does not necessarily delete or uninstall everything, i.e., registry entries may remain. You can delete the registry entries manually. Without those unnecessary registry entries xp might load a couple of seconds faster? I don't know about "configuring xp" by dell so that its notebooks performs at full potential, but it probably doesn't make much of a difference...xp is xp.

I suggest uninstal everything, buy one of the good registry cleaners and ur all set. I dont suggest reformat with new systems

i do it just to make sure... it's like taking a car to a mechanic... if i do it myself, i know it's done thorough

Reformatting makes the system soooo much faster. IT definately beats uninstalling, as that leaves junk behind that slows your system. The speed difference, and boot time, when I reformatted compared to uninstalling was heaps!!!
