Dell Inspiron 6000 vs Acer Ferrari 4000

Debating between two laptops, as mentioned in the title of the thread. Going to be using in college, so mobility is important, as is battery life. Will be playing some games, watching movies, etc. Also want this to last a few years, so if 64 bit processor is major, than that could be a factor. However, I dont want to pay a lot for the Ferrari for it not to matter. Dell is certainly cheaper, but I love Ferrari look. Any comments would be really appreciated.

Dell Inspiron 6000 (w/ 34% off) $1768 + $250 for ram upgrade
-Pent M 2.0 GHZ 760 (2mb cache), Microsoft XP PRO, WUXGA ultrasharp 15.4, 2 GB Ram (upgrading via crucial.com), ATI x300 128 mb graphics card, 60 gb 7200 rpm HD, bluetooth 2915 Intel pro w/ bluetooth, 8x dvd burner, 2 year warranty with accidental care (which will be doubled via creditcard), 9 cell + 6 cell battery

Acer Ferrari 4000 ~$2200 pending availability
-(all approximate) 1.8 ghz Mobile AMD turion 64 (1mb cache), XP Pro, 1 gb ram (havent checked out upgrade prices), 100 gb 5400 rpm HD, ATI radeon x700 graphics 128 mb, 5 in 1 reader, 15.4 wsxga+, integrated super multi drive

basically paying more for a worse computer, but maybe will be better in future? the ferrari look is worth a lot to me, but if Dell is signicantly better its not. any thoughts, im sure many are debating same stuff.

the Ferrari is 2Ghz and its not a worse computer, the ATI x300 sucks ace compared to the x700

yah, is it worth the extra money though, considering dell has better ram, cache, and screen? and processor id guess at least now

Well if your going to be gameing then you're going to need a good GPU. The x700 definitely tops the x300. Aside from that the Dell has good specs.

yah, but im not gonan be gaming hard core thats the thing

How many of these thread do you really need to make? Your not a gamer so you dont need the ferrari, unless you want to pay extra for something you wont use to its full potential.

Why would you spend $2000 on an Inspiron 6000? I don't think many debate between a fully decked out 6000 and an Acer Ferrari 4000. Quite frankly, if you're going to go for an Inspiron 6000, go for low-end. Dell's upgrades are overpriced like crazy. I configured an Inspiron 6000 with

1.6ghz P-M
15.4" WSXGA+
DVD-R/W
XP Home
1GB of DDRII RAM (was going to upgrade via newegg.com)
128MB x300
40GB HDD
2 year warranty

It ran me about $1150. I was going to order it, but decided against it. Why would I order such a lower-end machine? Simple, in two years, that extra $800 spent would be down the toilet. Heh, July 24th, the P-M 760 should be dropping about $140~160. I could easily use that $800 to put towards a new computer later which would be much better.

EDIT: BTW, I just configured an ASUS Z71v with nearly the same exact specs as your Inspiron 6000 (except it's WSXGA+ but has an nVidia GeForce 6600 Go). It ran me $2035 taxed and shipped. If you are a student, it costs $1990.

well, so ferrari will last longer in terms of usability?

It IS worth the extra money. Acer Ferrari 4000 is currently the best 64 bit notebook on the market! For games, portability and features.

Regardless of how powerful the Ferrari is, just buy something that suits your needs. If you don't need a gameing machine the Dell will suit your casual needs fine.
Ferrari if you are going to be doing gaming. Otherwise the Dell would probably be a better deal especially with those $750 off coupons!

well now dell has a 34% off which comes out to around 900 off

Dell 9300

I say drop both of those, use a 750 off plus free shipping code and get a I-9300 with everything you want on it, 3 year warranty (or 4) and let it come to you. Dell 9300 is no joke, regardless of Acers better paint job

any issues?
the palm rest get a little warm under ac power i haven't acually looked to see what the heat is coming from to see if I can get rid of some of it, but it is not unbearable at all. That is the only issue I can think of, the battery lasts around 3.5hours with wifi on and everything else is really good.
