Ok, was all the hype, so i tried it. I mrecently bought an second hand hauppauge WinTV Express PCI TV capture card. SO here is a the config on the desktop:

AMD 2000+ 256 pc2700 DDR
ATI 9200 SE agpx8 ( AGP v3.0 ) 128 Megs Dual VGA + TV Out
MSI KT4 with a KT400a agp x8 bridge ( non AGP v2.0 arrgh )
DVD samsung / 80 gig Maxtor / 20 Gig WD
Hauppage WinTV Express chip bt878

Debian Sid testing/unstable
Linux ns1 2.6.0-test8 #2 Sat Oct 18 19:54:53 CEST 2003 i686 GNU/Linux

Then downloaded and followed step by step the great guide found there: http://www.mythtv.org/modules.php?name=MythInstall and compiled as well the latest QT ( 3.2.2 ) libraries and tools, well, after a few days, i realised that being on a cable network in france i do not get program broadcast like you folks can in America. But hey, it is not yet newbie friendly but it is IMPRESSIVE:

In clear MythTV transform ya linux box in a tivo, pvr, cdplayer, vcr, mp3/ogg music, weather center, TV, DVD player, DVD ripper...theres is a bunch of mudules that can be added. Whats great is the tivo like, as it will record tv ahead for you, automatic commercial skipping in recording and replay, ya can schedule anything the interface is yummy but requires Qt. Even better it has a module with a web interface that let you connect remote and schedule recordings. Here 's a screenshot of it, at 800x600 , cause TV quality isn't great at 1600x1200. Dont look at the rest its ugly.

How quick is it in actual use? I mean, scrolling through the channel guide, setting things to record, etc.?

Recently TiVo updated my software and now I have the option of using the "TV Guide" brand menu OR the original TiVo one. Well, the TV-Guide one looks like Microsoft's offerings (very excel-like, but colors and layout are beautifully done) but it's PAINFULLY slow. Not sure how fast a CPU is in the TiVO (linux) box, but it chugs on that newer guide.

I'm back to the original TiVo one (pretty basic, and a unique layout) and it's quick. I just don't think I should be seeing the "grid" redrawn even if there's a 66MHz processor in there...

I've been tempted to throw together an all-in-one home media thing, and I've looked at Linux more than MS's Windows Media Center offering...

Plus, if you can get something like Media Center 9 (all-in-one viewer/player/streamer) in there as well, it'd be kick-ass.

Speed

Well, to tell the truth, MythTV is mindblowingly fast here. But the config helps i bet:
- AMD 2000+
- 512 pc2700 DDR
- AGPx8 kt400a - ata133
- Ati 9200 128 DDR agpx8 dual VGA + Tv out
- WinTV Hauppauge TV card
- Debian Sid 2.6.0-test9

The only noticeable problems are because French TV and cable tv in france sucks so its a pain getting all the info correctly. It rips DVD pretty good too, the weather is a cool feature. Once ya get mysql to load ya programs properly, then its easy.
Are gonna try ?
