Yes, sounds like it would be worth it.

Maybe, if the price were lower.
  • 12% (7)
No, these notebooks already rock and it would be wasted money.

We are very much considering offering this. It requires a tear down and painting. This will be nothing short of top quality. Initial costs to the customer looks to be around $250. We're still working out details so pricing could be changed in either direction.

Just voted; a different colour paintjob would be interesting, but IMO it's pretty expensive at $250...

I know it sounds like a high price, but this is why it is this price so far:

-1-2 hours tear down and prep labor
-paint and equipment used
-assembly and shipping

I would want no part in it unless it was the highest quality paint and work. I'm really only throwing it around to see if people would like it pursued. The final price would still be many hundreds under the price to buy through Alienware.

And I know where you can get those alien head stickers You can actually make an alienware clone for hundreds less! Hmmm and then probably spend the rest of your life in court. Maybe not such a good idea. Let's just stick to the paint....

PS - I already got my alien head sticker and will put it on my Sager. Closest I can get to an alienware area 51m.

I would do this if I haven't received the laptop yet. But now that I am using my laptop, I cannot part from it. If the service is to have an extremely fast turn around time, I might be interested. If the price is lowered by about $100, it would be even more attractive.

i think it would be much cooler if we are to pay that $250 ,we could choose the notebook color design on the notebook, like a setting on the site where ones can creaes the design and different color they want on there labtop to make it even more unique than alienware. maybe then that would then b worth the 250, so what u think pctorque?

I think paint jobs would be great!! They do seem to be a bit expensive -- even 50 dollars off would seem like a better deal-- but if I was spending 2500+ on a laptop I would give it that extra 150-200 for the good looks.... though I definately think that there should still be a no-paint option. not everybody feels the way I do.

I'm looking to buy a Sager from PC Torque in the not-too-distant future and I'd love to have a paint option. I'm not really too fond of the current silver-ish color of the 5660s and would like to get one in black or blue. Alienware's painted laptops look really great (seen a few) but not worth the extra money, which is like $600-700 more than PC Torque. Even if PC Torque charged $200 for a paintjob you'd still be getting the machine at a great price. I'd love to see some pics of a test machine if you decide to give it a try, PCTORQUE.

If. . .

$250 is well worth it. . .

. . . If we can get a graphic logo painted or transfered to the case as well . . .

yea... picking your own color would rock! the price should be a little lower.

Personally, I think $250 for a quality paint job is reasonable. Would take a lot of work. However, I'd be skeptical of durability of paint-over-plastic on what I would consider a heavy-wear item. Especially at the corners over time. Color should be in the plastic (OEM level). Just my opinion.

yea okay... can just get an awesome alienware instead
You think 250 is too much yet you are willing to pay 900-1300 (depending on color) more for an alienware laptop (configured exactly the same as a sager 5660)
Maybe you didnt understand, let me clarify...

When you said

"No but i'll paint your sager any color you want for $1000"

... i think its better to buy a alienware then pay you $1000 for coloring the laptop. So its better to buy a alienware directly then buying a sager then paying you $1000 to change the color.

Do you understand now?

its not that... its just that its better to buy a laptop that already has the color you want than buying a laptop and paying $1000 to get it colored...

For $250 I assume that you'll be using an automotive paint. Are you thinking about a single stage enamel or perhaps a Base coat/Clear coat which would allow for the addition of metallics, pearls and candies

If serious you could set up a nice customizing business. $250 for an automotive finish with the user being able to select color and additives like candy, metalflake, metallics, and pearl done by a professional in a 'spray booth' is well worth it. But, if you're talking $250 for Walmart Rustoleum then I'd pass.
i'd definately do it for 150 ... 200 is a maybee, but probably not at 250 ... unless i were to run into a random large sum of money

ofcourse, metalic-y-ness would be cool, as would choice of color
post #19 of 39
This may be shallow, but I would definitely pay $250 to paint it, even if I had to give up some performance to afford it. Obviously, having a high performance machine is important, but it would just make everyone so jealous if I had an 8886 painted chameleon (dunno if it'll be offered, but it would be cool). I cry at night because I'm so superficial.

hmmm... lets see... who brought this great thread back to life??? lalala oo yes... elitemetal!! i didn't think anybody read past page 3!! haha thanx fer bringin it back. back in "tha good ol' days" when this thread was started i remember that there were very few members to the forum...

bbbggg.. i believe I have heard from sumwhere that the paint on the case is heated so that it adheres/melds with the plastic... can anybody clarify this?? i could very well be wrong but....

if the price was at $200 i would litteraly jump on it (not the sager but the deal). at $250 i would think about it for about... 5 min and then say ok... depending on the financial situation. I DEFINATELY would not want to buy the paint if it was to be easily scratched off, scuffed, etc etc... would there be any touch up paint that comes with it??
