Do you think the 9300/XPS2 screen is poor?

Thread Starter
I've been reading post after post complaining about the 9300's screen, especially the WXGA+ screen. I've also read that the Gateway m680 has a screen that is perhaps the best on the market with NO light leakage. I have to admit that the screen on my 9300 is not the greatest, but I don't think it's horrible. There are a few dark spots on it by the corners, but it's not too pronounced. I also don't have any dead pixels. I've seen the WUXGA screens and the text is just too small for me. I have not seen an m680, but it must have a great screen if so many are raving about it. How do you like the screen on your 9300/XPS2?

I have no problems with my screen. It has no sparkles no bad pixels and the light leakage has basically gone away with time.

Mine blew me away. But maybe I was lucky.

I've seen a 17' Toshiba and a Sony but they were both lower resolutions. If it don't have 1920x1200 I don't even bother looking at it.

I stream security video over the web and have a few screens up all the time. Plus I have up at the same time the live desktops of Till programs. With 1400x900 ~ I just can't fit it all in and respond to an email; or write a memo at the same time for example.

I did have a little light leakage, not that I even knew what that was b4 this forum, but it has virtually gone now.

My XPS 2 has a little light leakage at the bottem.
I only see this with a complete black screen.
Overal... with a complete black screen I can see that the screen is lit obviously.
I don't get the same black intensity as when it's turned off.
From a Dutch forum, I know someone who has send his XPS 2 for a 4th time to DELL because he finds his light leakage unacceptable.
Personally... I think it's the best screen I've ever witnessed when it comes to crisp colours and solid contrast/brightness ratios.

I also have heard rumours about this Gateway machine with this oh so perfect screen.
If this is really true, and everybody is so full of it, I wonder why I haven't read more about it or found pictures on the net of it.
(Found plently of pictures of people shooting and posting pictures of their XPS 2 screen so far... where is the oh so perfect Gateway screen review / pictures then???)

Even if it is better...
I sure as hell am not complaining about my screen!
(Even "fixed" a dead pixel myself within 30 seconds this afternoon....)

I love my LG. I can see how the white can be a little over-bright or grainy to some people, nothing really sparkly, but you get used to that quickly, and it's partly because it's the brightest screen I've ever had. It's better than my Sony trinitron crt, and I went to the store to look at Sony laptop screens, and their colors are slightly better over wider angles it seems, but all in all, not nearly as nice to look at as this.

Ehmm... correct me if I am wrong.
But.
Weren't there a few posts here which were taking the piss out of the fact that I truely fixed my screen ect.?
(I must be loosing it because of the alcohol probably.... :S)

i have an i9300, 17" true life with wuxga. after changing from the factory settting of 120 dpi to 96 dpi (to eliminate unpleasant JPG artifiacts) and to take full advantage of 1920x1200, i find that this screen looks great. the corners do dim slightly and on a full black screen u do see a small light leakage at the bottom, and i think i know now what people are referring to about a slight sparkly effect on an all white background. but none of it ruins it for me. i love the high res! its such a big workspace. i also have an older 17" notebook with 1440x900 screen and it looks rather primitive now and it feels very confined.

my only real 'complaint' is that the default color balance of the screen seems rather blue to me. i do graphic design and photography so i may be more picky about it, but i have to create a custom color profile to get the color to look good. since i can correct for it, i'm not overly concerned; however, when i go to a full screen 3D game, my color correction goes away! and it does not come back when i go back to desktop, unless i manuallly go activate the color profile again. so it sucks to not be able to play games full screen in correct color.

i wonder if all of the WUXGA true lifes have this issue (too blue) or did i maybe get a bad one? or is my eye just fond of warmer tones?

the screen isn't much of a problem. the problem lies in the craftmanship of the rim bezel around the screen. most of the time it's not screwed in right so you get light leakage.

Is that the reason for light leakage? That's news to me; not that I have a clue about LCD's.

If you mean me i only send it back 2 times and am still running my 3th screen with the hope that light leakage will reduce but untill now it is still the same.

It is no rumor.

I used to have the XPS2 2.13 Ghz with 1 gig of RAM but I had to return it because of the bad display. First I had the LG screen and it had sparkles then I had a Dell technician came to my house to replace the screen and he replaced it with the Samsung and it still had sparkles but a little less. However, it has worse light leakage. So I had to completely send my XPS2 back for a full refund.

Then I got myself the Gateway m680 and the display/screen just blew me away. I love it. No more sparkles! The graphic card of X700 is not bad either because I can play most games out there with the highest setting smoothly.

If you go to the Gateway forum in this website, you will see that 100% of the people love the screen because 100% of them say they don't see any sparkles.
Yes you read it right....100%.

You cannot say that about the XPS2 or the 9300.

The reason you don't hear much about the m680 is because that unit came out after the XPS2. Also, Gateway is not as popular as the Dell so people don't pay much attention to them.
There are a few reviews with pictures about the Gateway m680.

My screen is good. A little bit of light leakage on the bottom, but it is only noticible when the screen is completely black and the room is dark.

The screen on my 9300 is amazing (WUXGA) I don't see any sparklies, or dead pixels. It gets "Oohs and ahhs" from friends when they see it. I do have a slight amount of light leakage though..big deal.

I had the bluish tint too, and I just adjusted it using steam's green as a reference, and just a little bit of digital vibrance fixed it all right away. All my colors seemed to be set equally.

After about 8 exchanges (LG's and Samsungs) I can say the screens are certainly less than average. Mostly really bad light leakage. The sparkles, grainyness and grayish whites are tolerable...I guess.

I have a 9300 I just got with the standard WXGA screen at 1440X900 resolution. I have no dead pixels, in a review I read somewhere said the brightness wasnt that good, but yet I have to turn mine down. I dont have any poor light leakage around the screen, that isnt to say there is zero, there is a very faint and barely noticable amount, but even with an all black background and moving the taskbar around and checking it is very good around all edges. The blacks are good as well, not grey and not charcoal the screen has one of the better blacks on a Laptop LCD I have seen so far. The only I am trying to figure out is playing DVD's on this thing. I think this particular resolution may not be optimum for this. I have the 6800 go plus I am running the NVDVD for the dvd player and using Nvidias NV DVD decoder which is supposed to work with the 6800's hardware capable purevideo to enhance DVD's. They look almost HD in windowed mode but as soon as I put it into full screen mode it is subpar. According to the documentation the purevideo function is supposed to give enhanced scaling and I should not notice a difference but I do. Other than that I do not know which LCD panel I have in my 9300 (LG, Samsung) but it is excellent so far.
