trying to choose between sony t/s series, and averatec 1000/4200 series

Thread Starter
i am ready to purchase a compact notebook and have narrowed it down to the sony t series and s series, and the averatec 1000 and 4200 series.....each appears to be a competitor of the other, but each of the sonys are almost $1000 more expensive than the averatec's......any comments between the two brands?....i do not do gaming, but would probably watch and maybe even edit DVD's and picture editing etc.....any advice would be greatly appreciated

From a previous post:

"Just a brief caveat emptor for prospective buyers : one would be hard pressed to find a more poor example of customer service than what most desktop/laptop users receive through Sony (on other electronics-related product lines, their service seems to be at the very least acceptable). Couple said service with proprietary, low performance, high failure-rate parts, and it can often be a difficult road for an end user. I do however conceed their displays (including the new XBrite models) are some of the most eye pleasing in the market today.

A bit of research on the web will find more than one would ever wish to know regarding customer service. With the inherent complicated nature and usage habits of a notebook, it is to be expected that, on occasion, parts and products fail; and when this occurs, you will want to have purchased from a company who not only (1) knows the hardware in their machines (technical support from Sony is typically limited to information only found in the user manual. And only for the first year. After such time, $19.95. Per call, mind you.), but (2) is willing to stand behind what they produce - or in the case of most notebooks, what other manufacturers produce for them.

I unfortunately waded through the Vaio world once (actually, more than once, as the original machine was replaced four times), and would hate to see another discover that neither of the above two statements apply to Sony."

averatecs are known to be "ok" when it comes to build quality, not the greatest, but by far not the shittiest stuff on the market. What averatecs are also known for is delivering the best bang for the buck when it comes to 12" laptops and so on

A 9 pages review from a french website (can be translated in English by google). It looks very promissing as a budget laptop.

I am interested in trying one of this as well. I have never aware of (or just ignore) the existance of Averatec. When I saw Averatec 1000 in person at local CompUSA, it completely changed my view of this small player. The 1000 I saw had a LCD that smoke Sony T big time (my opinion). Sony T has serious sparkles (sliver tone on suppose to be white color) and not as bright as 10.6" Averatec 1000. However, Averatec 1000 runs pretty hot and I am not fond of white color laptop as it gets very very dirty on the display unit in COmpUSA.

I'll go to Staples store next weekend to try out Averatec 4200. I currently owns a 700m but would love to have 13.3" laptop. Dell 700m is an excellent machine but 12.1" is a bit smaller. My concerns on Averatec are the heat issue that I experienced in its 1000, sturdy-ness, and maybe battery life. My 700m can run about 5 hours with 8 cell and has metal chassis and lid that helps to disburse heat. However according to the linked review, it indicates that Averatec 4200 temperature runs around 30-34C degree, which is darn great. My 700m run at 50C degree in average. My Dell 9200 run at 30-32 all the time and is the COOLEST laptop I have ever had. If the review is correct, I am one step closer to acquire one.
