About the 1-21-03 Update...
YES!!! HT is in! Hopefully, we'll be able to update the BIOS easily if needed for it.

Having just recently ordered the Sager 5660 and expecting delivery tomorrow, I must now refrain from reading update posts like these - that announce the upcoming new (and bestest yet) items to be added to the Sager repetiore. It pains the heart really, y'know, going "Arrggh!!! If I'd only waited...!!!!"

Just kidding of course.

Essatly what I am afraid of - ordering the 5660 for all those $$$ and then finding out the next week that the prices have gone down and I could have waited and gotten a 8887 for the same or slightly more $$$

But thats the way the hardware world is see...no sympathy...

I strongly doubt that the 8887 will barely be over the price of the 5660. I'm hoping that the price doesn't jump over that of the 8886 by over $300!

Ha, I'm in the same boat as you, Rob. Adam just got my check but hasn't deposited it yet.... It get's real tempting to call him and say "Wait! gimme a price break before your order the parts!" . But, I know his margins are probably so low I don't mind giving the extra bit to him. You still wouldn't be able to beat PCTorque's prices.

I'm probably just going to bear it for around 6 months and sell my laptop to fund the next greatest thing. That's the good thing about laptops, they hold their value ALOT better than desktops.

Heh - well, about notebook resale value, while it could be comparatively better than desktops, it still hurts! I sold two of my notebooks second hand in the last year (using Singapore dollars)

1) IBM Thinkpad 240X, purchased at S$2400, sold at S$900 1 year later.

2) Toshiba Protege 3480, purchased at S$2800, sold at S$1600 6 months later.

The first was sold at 38% of my purchase price, the second 57%. Both times, it was intolerably - but I really didn't want the hassle of having to look and negotiate with more buyers, so sold it at those prices...

It depends how you outfit the 8887--If you add everything topped out, then it will probably be around 2600. With the dvd burner option though, that could easily be another 300 or more. Who knows--www.eurocom.com says the new screen will be an additional 200--but they're overpriced anyway. I'm just hoping its under 3000!!

8887 - What I'd go for

Assuming that I am not really into Hyper-Threading (read somewhere that it doesn't really improve game play unless your vide card and mobo support 8x AGP) and I go for a 2.8/3.0 Ghz with 512/1024 MB Ram and the new 16.1"UXGA with the 128 MB M9 - what do you reckon the lappy will cost.

I am hoping $2400 - $2600 with 2.8/512/16.1"UXGA/128 M9

Anyone thinks i'm dreaming (I hope not but I probably am )

Cheers!!

BTW

By the way - I dont need the MP3 player/DVD RW/Wireless...Doesnt improve my game play..

Dumb question... what is the speed of the DVD-R drive? I know that Apple uses a 1x drive (write speed), which is about 8x DVD read and 24x CD read, I think.

Second dumb question... if I order a cheap processor, say, the lowest 533 FSB chip, the 2.4GHz, I can just buy a new desktop processor and switch it out when the 3.06GHz (HT) is more affordable... right?

For some reason I keep thinking I saw a picture of somebody opening the bottom and pulling the processor out...

Depends...

It depends on which model you get - 5660 probably 3.06 HT not happening - you might wanna go all the way with the 2.8 right now if you arent too thrilled about waiting till June for the upgrade on the 5660.

8887 - no one seems to know FOR SURE what its gonna have and how much its gonna cost - keep your fingers crossed for you and for my sake that some news spills out sometime soon - one reason why I dont watch movies with suspense - just cant stand it!!!

i saw that some resellers put DDR PC2700 533Mhz in 8886 do you think we could have it in 8887 ?

Will the 8887 use the same model uxga screen that the 5660 uses which I have read is inferior to Dell's?

Since their 15.7" was 16M colors, I'm assuming it will be also. With it's angle viewing, brightness, colors, and resolution I'm betting it will be up to Dell's ultrasharp standards.

Not to mention it'll be HUGE :-) Wow I can't wait to see this thing :-)

BTW, DDR2700 is not 533... DDR2700 is 333. There is also a 400, and now a 533, but it is not out for desktops yet, and I highly doubt it will be available for notebooks anytime soon (but it is the fastest RAM... faster than RDRAM at 1066).

Look at the memory option for the 88E Here

RAM

Hello there,

Is what stephlight saying true? The French site does seem to offer 2 different types of memory, and I am just wondering if:

a) It's BS and they are simply ripping people off.
b) It actually is faster RAM but is not compatible and thus is just as slow as the regular type.
c) It is faster AND compatible and it makes sense to buy it.

Anyone can shed some light on this? They also mention it being "optimized" and I'm also dubious of the statement.

Speaking of which, is it possible to use the DDR RAM beebster is talking about ("faster than RDRAM at 1066") in notebooks (i.e. the 8887)? I mean are they compatible (when it comes out, of course)?

Thanks.

I seriously doubt that the PC2700 RAM offered on pcw.fr actually runs that fast in the laptop. The motherboard chipset has to support that speed as well, and to my knowledge, the Clevo 88x/Sager 888x chipsets support up to PC2100 RAM.

Is pcw.fr ripping people off? Not necessarily... (in this context) if the faster RAM works faster than their other offering, it is sorta 'working as advertised'.

Is the upgrade to PC2700 worth it? No. You're paying for more capacity than you can use. There is no guarantee that you'll ever be able to use PC2700 to its full potential. And considering the 'normal' life expectancy of laptops (and computer technology in general), you might as well save the extra $$$ for software or some other gizmo.

Who is selling 333/PC2700 with their 8886? I looked around and didn't see any places that were. I don't even see a place that makes it in the 200 pin SODIMM version. I checked Crucial and Mushkin and they only have up to PC2100. I'm not sure (doubtful) if it would work, it would depend if the system would pick it up by auto detect and run it correctly which I doubt.
