Well guys I may soon be able to ditch windows entirely. I've been dabling with crossover office on my lappy. I got the full suite of apps working most importantly is Outlook. I still need to get my palm 3xe to sync with said outlook. and some custom apps for my switches and routers. Then run it past the boss and I'm golden. Any Ideas. Corporate standard is MS, winxp and office XP. But I got the boss to atleast let me show him it can be done.
Here's a list of things that I need to make run.
ESI-Tools, it's for phone programming.
Palm apps to sync with outlook under linux.
Cisco view-mail to check voice mail remotely thru Outlook.
That's realy it. Office was the big killer. Now it's the phone programming thing. I think I'll call the guys who wrote it and see if they can't help me out.

Oh yeah here's a link to my desktop showing office running running. Link to pic

Cool beans guys - I am unfortunately going the other way - from a linux only architecture back to a dual boot. While its tru that several games will run just fine in linux - most still do not. Curse my addiction to pretty colours and flashing lights.

While many linux folkes will tell you of various linux-syncing things, to go with OUTLOOK, you really need KEY SUITE from Chapura.com. It's relatively inexpensive and for the $40 or $50 you can get the CD mailed to you (and it's not tied to a user-name or anything, so if you have multiple handhelds...)

I really like KeySuites as it handles public folders and really makes Contacts bloom! Give it a try and see if it works under crossover or wine...

Jpilot - allows you to sync/install/backup/sync email etc all for the bargain price of $0. I use it all the time with my handspring. Also check out plucker - like Avantgo but better and strangely enough free also.

This is what I was refering to. Yes, there are some great *pilot apps out there, but the trick is he needs to sync with OUTLOOK - that's MICROSOFT's OUTLOOK. I haven't heard of a linux-native app that does this.

My question is if you are running Linux full time why in hell would you run outlook still? There are a number of products that offer all the functionality of outlook and run natively on Linux.

I have to use outlook at work and trust me when I say - it is the devil's child.

That's why. Some of us are forced into using Outlook. Nay, a GREAT NUMBER of us are. That's why MS is such a majority in the software world.

I know it burns your bum - it burns a lot of folkes' bums, but that's how it is. I know that there are "rough" equivalents for *nix (hello Evolution) but they are nowhere near Outlook's level... yet.

I remain hopeful that they'll get there soon, though.

I'm lucky to even get the chance to prove it can be done at all. I'm one of the senior engineers at the office so I have a little more lee way. Unfortunately everything has to be totaly seamless. He was seriously impressed with crossover office. I had to open all the office components and show him it was functional. Good thing I got samba set up earlier in the day. I still have a few things to set up but so far so good.
