I'm new to this forum so bare with me. I did try to find out about these topic but only came across using 2 hdd in 9300 so it doesn't really answer my question. I just recently purchase my laptop and it is my first purchase. I do not want to spend extra money on 7200 rpm hard drive for laptop that is way overboard. So I was wondering if my 160gb maxtor desktop hardrive is able to fit in my new laptop internally. I saw some brackets that are made available for the swap but what are the cons? Also well the laptop be able to read over 100 gb? Most importantly well it damage my notebook in anyway. Thanks

no desktop drives are 3.5 inches across and laptops are 2.5 inches.

so no, it would never fit inside the laptop.

well there are a few desktop replacements that do take 3.5" drives. I remember seeing one that could house 2, but it was a 14 lb giant. In a regular laptop, no, you cant.

There are indeed a few, this being one of the earlier models.

One solution not mentioned to simply make use of an inexpensive external IEEE1394a/USB 2.0 enclosure, which can accept a 3.5" desktop drive.

of course you can if the HDD is 2.5"

But there are no 7200rpm drives at 160GB... yet. I think the biggest is 100gb and a 120 may be around the corner.

[edit] BTW, I'm referring to 2.5" laptop harddrives.
