Review Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M4438G - Page 9

DVI is not digital vibrance, it's an interface for connecting a computer to a monitor. And yes, the 3438 has a brilliant screen. I haven't compared a Vaio to the 3438 though... but I do know that both FS and Sony are well-known for their high quality screens.
hi snowman, sorry for the incorrect spelling, hmm it sould be DVC (Digital vibrance control).

To make things clear i did not ask to be spell checked. Answer my questions insteed.

I know FJ and Sony make good screens, I have one myself. what i mentioned was some minor problems with bad colors and a white screen.

If this comp would have a P4 processor it would burn a nice hole through the wooden table I have it on

Yes, I am completely sure the main reason for the heatage is the GPU with the DDR1 memory, but the cooling solution on the 3438G really isn't very good, sadly
Yes...that could be it.
But I would try also to underclock (or undervolt) the CPU. Maybe there is some heating over there too.
About the 75...I haven't had over 70 degrees yet. And I can keep the lappy on my lap It's not that hot.
Maybe you should speak with your provider or smth...dunno.

@freeze19
About the versions from F-S with GDDR3 on their 6800-s it's waiting for nothing...it only has higher points in 3dmark but no new technologies and when the DDR1 version won't be enough I assure you that neither the GDDR3 version will... And that will happen at least 1 and a half year from now...

Gents,

just a quick question. the M3438 is a current release laptop from fuji yes? Not a soon to be replced model?
It's just that whilst speaking to a PC World rep on the phone yesterday and he mentioned that it was an end of line model. Is it? or did he just mean that PCWorld won't be selling it anymore?
Any info?

Cheers
They said that to me too, but when they say 'end-of-line', it means they will be replacing the model in PC world. So these are the two possibilities, but I don't know which they'll be choosing:
a) A new 3438 is brought in with a faster processor and/or larger hard drive (or two)
b) A completely new model is brought in, not necessarily FS. It's also unlikely it'll be the 4438.

Maybe graphics card upgrade (Go to Ultra; DDR1 to DDR3)? And end of overheating problem?
It would be great

UPGRADE: And maybe internal bluetooth? (yes, yes, yes!)
Well seeing as I'm an impatient sod I placed the order for it this morning anyway. Got to go and pay for it yet though. I don't think I should worry about what is over the horizon as there will always be sommit better although it will probably p me off of it is replaced the next day. Unless of course anyone has any inside knowledge as to what it will be?

Yes I have that one. I believe Vampire has another. I assure you, It does not recognize my mp3 or movies on harddrive. AND it doesnt boot with 2 harddrives. All out of the box.

No Powercinema, no bios, no new graphics driver. Whats happening?

Where can i get an Amilo 4438 in Germany ???

Thank you for any hint,

Nils, a guy who was *this* close to buy a Dell 9300 before he saw the 4438...
this is the same question i wanted to ask, because i have also searched a lot in web or in store, but never found 4438

With all the little problems with this I have a really hard time deciding whether the comp is actually good really... I'm sure some of you guys share my view on this.

BTW, has anyone gotten more info about the MXM slot and it's upgradability... If Nvidia would put out the mobile version of the G70 or something, I'd be really interested

Regarding my overheating, I have witnessed temps just a bit short from 80 degrees celsius on my comp, that's really a bit more than I'd like to have, with factory settings and all... and on the table with no airflow limited.

As far as the undervolting goes, well, I might try that, if it really doesn't have any risks attached... If I do I'll let you guys know how it went.

And Freeze19, it's not an Go 6800 Ultra, just plain Go 6800 sadly...

Keep the thread going you all, will you ?

Has anyone bought the Amilo M3438G (item number LKN: GBR-177200-008) from the British web site of fujitsu-siemens? Can you tell me in what frequency do its DDR2 RAM operate? I also read a thread telling that soon a new series or an updated version of m3438g will be available; does anyone know more details about this e.g. when will be available?

I really think your laptop has something not right because today I played for 6 hours non stop Doom3 and Unreal tournament 2004 and I haven't had any crash and every one in a while I checked the Gpu temperatures an they were about 65...I've never had above 70.
And next to me there was a Dell Inspiron 9300 that was just BOILING! when I put my hands under it ... this close to a nuclear reactor.

The 3438 is above the average with the temperatures (DDR1 mems on the video card) but it's not impossible.
Again maybe yours has a problem.

btw... is there a patch for Doom 3 to support the 1440*900 or it's the problem with the NVIDIA drivers? does anyone know this?
If Doom 3 lists 1440x900 as one of its options, then I guess it's the drivers. If you can't select it, then the game would be at fault. If it's the game, look around on the internet for a solution. There is a website that specialises in widescreen gaming (and patching games to work with it), but I can't remember what it was. There must be a link on these forums somewhere, as I wouldn't have been to the site otherwise.
Doom3 doesnt support widescreen. If you want widescreen, you can alter the .INF file where it has the resolution and change the width and height to 1440 and 900. This doesnt screw up doom at all.

Man, those are some cool temps you have there, *grins*
I haven't had a crash with Doom 3 yet either, but with Far Cry and, ahem, Warcraft 3...

Regarding the resolution of Doom 3, make a new .txt file to your "base" folder and put these lines in it:

seta r_customHeight "900"
seta r_customWidth "1440"
seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_aspectratio "2"

Then rename the file to autoexec.cfg

Then just run doom 3 and let us know your temps and performance
post #178 of 579
i tried but it doesn't work..actually the highest resolution I could set was 800*600.Really weird. I played, 65 degrees in average on the Gpu with High quality and 800*600.
But I REALLY don't like the way it loads the game (
I have only 512 Ram and one 80 Gb hard disk but it loads very slow with freezing times every 5 minutes. Maybe the insufficient Ram is the problem because I have it set on High Quality.
But it runs smoothly when there is no loading activity in the game.

What do u guys say about the loading perfomances? I saw u all have the RAID versions with 2 hard-disks and 1 Gb of Ram.
I'm really disapointed in this and I don't know if I made the right decision by buying the 1.6 Ghz, 512 Ram, 1*80 Hard disk

Again I say...no problems with the graphics card whatsoever. And 65 degrees while playing Doom.
Doesn't work? Damn...

So you have the autoexec.cfg in the base folder with those lines in it and the extension of the file is the .cfg and not .txt ?

Actually after you have done this you don't get the 1440*900 as an option showing up in game, the game will just have the resolution you specified in autoexec as soon as it starts up.
For example I don't have any patches installed for the Doom3 yet (I don't know whats your case) and in game visual settings show that the resolution would be 640*480. It isn't, it's the custom resolution you specified.

As far as whether you made a wrong decision, well, 1 gig memory is good thing to have though... but hey at least your temps are lower than mine

And Doom3 does load rather slow on my comp as well (though I haven't yet setup the RAID).
It worked! 10x for the last post ruptured

Because of the loading times I wasn't patient enough to load a game...I just looked at the settings which were 640*480. So now i can play smoothly at 1440*900.

512 ram is enough only for medium quality...well, it's a good thing to know in the future

btw, I did the undervolting and it really helps, but only in CPU temps. And the fan now stays off 99 percent. When it does turn on it brings out normal air, not over heated air.
I was able to set the Min Vid at 0.700V and the Max Vid at 0.988.
Now I want to overclock from 1.6 to 2.0 with these reduced voltages and see what it brings out
