Review Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M4438G - Page 13

I'll have to get my mum's digital camera tomorrow or something. I should really have my own... but I don't. Either way, the priority is getting my system running with XP Pro first. I've had some problems with installing the USB drivers (after windows has been installed).
Hope you figure out the problem, really anxious to read your review

It would be great to compare temps of 3438 with 1 HDD and the one with 2 HDDs. I'm going to buy the 3438 with 1 HDD (80GB)

@Strange Species please keep us updated. Thanx
post #243 of 579
Yeah, I fixed the problem now. Note to people intending to install XP Pro without a service pack: Install SP1, followed by SP2, and then all the system drivers on the supplied CD

Just a quick question Strange Species, does your DVD/CD drive make HUGE noise when you insert a CD in it... mine does, first lappy, don't know whether it should...
Well, HUGE definitely not.

@Strange Species that sounds a bit confusing. I made a CD where the SP2 is integrated with Windows. This is by far the best option. Surely there is no need in putting first the SP1 and then the SP2?
Well, when I reformatted my desktop PC a few months ago, I installed just SP2. There were then serious problems with USB 2.0 devices. I'm not sure if it was a direct consequence of installing SP2 without SP1, but I think that it's worth the extra installation time, as long as you have the SP1 CD or a fast internet connection to download the SP1 network installation.

As for the CD drive, yes, mine does make a lot of noise with certain CDs. Some are fine, while others are not. Probably depends how they were written. However, DVDs do not suffer this problem at all, and the drive is really quiet while reading those.

Ok, just installed the new graphics drivers (newest official beta ones with .inf patch), and it went from 3509 -> 3692 in 3DMark05.

Would an additional 12-cell battery be expensive to buy, to replace using the stock 8-cell one? Where would it be possible to buy one?

How much longer would the 12cells give you over the 2hr quoted figure for the 8cells?

(Logic suggests the difference (figuratively) between 12 and 8 is 1.5, therefore 2hrs x 1.5 = 3hrs?)
All updates that are included in SP1 are also included in SP2.

How good is the screen for the 3438. If you take the Vaio A497 and lower the resolution from the 1600x1200 it gets all blurry and not as sharp as expected. Is it the same for the 3438. Can you set down resolution to 1024x768 when playing BF2 and still have the sharpness? Are the colors any good compared to vaio series?

Thanks!

Well, when I first played Doom 3 on my comp it was on 1024*768, I thought it looked just nice... however then after some time, I changed the resolution to native (1440*900) and I had to admit, it didn't look as good as that (naturally).

But what I'm trying to say is that lowering the resolution somewhat in 3D games isn't as catastrophic (in my opinion) for the perceived image quality as it is in 2D applications (especially in those that show you text that you need to read ) because like you said, things do get blurry.

I would still try my best to run everything in native, though.

Now, I'm pretty sure all this didn't help one bit... mission accomplished

IMPORTANT

The GeForce Go 6800 CAN be overclocked on the M3438G. I just got a score of 4042 on 3DMark05 with default (automatic) overclock settings. This is using the 80.xx drivers (leaked, see www.laptopvideo2go.com) if that makes a difference.

Interesting! Sorry my notebook at repair right now. Anybody else can confirm?

In that link that G-Force provided ( http://www.hwupgrade.it/forum/showth...&page=19&pp=20 ) one Italian guy OC-ed to 375/650 and got a nice score of 4373 so guess it's confirmed

@Strange Species I'm sure that you needn't have installed both SPs but it's fine as long as it works How do you like the keyboard by the way? Those German reviewers said that it bends quite a lot

Strange Species, I would sure try overclocking my GPU as well, but with my temps, I think I better not...
What kinds of temps are you getting with the GPU overclocked?

And also, what is your take on the ghosting of the screen, have you watched DVDs and stuff, what do you think about it?

I can't quite make an opinion about it, I never had an LCD screen before but in my opinion it's not quite as good with moving objects as "normal" monitor is... the crispness is lost on moving objects and so forth...
(I really don't know what is normal for a LCD screen)

I have started to suspect that there might be some problem with my memory modules, and that it would be the source of my crashes... not sure, I might try burning the memory test program I found from net to CD and running it, just wouldn't want to waste one CD for 900 KB... just why I haven't bought an USB memory??

The keyboard seems fine to me, not overly bendy or anything. My keyboard does have a small problem though, the spacebar is at a slight angle, which I think is related to the dip I mentioned earlier. That of course is just my laptop, not the model. I may get it replaced with an identical model, but I'm not sure yet.

I'll have to check the GPU temps after an overclocked 3DMark test. I'll do that after I post this, and then report on the results. I've watched 2 movies on this laptop so far since Wednesday, and it's been fine. I've noticed no ghosting at all. I've yet to play any games on it, but I'll be installing some tonight.

As for the memory modules, definitely test them. Use a re-writable CD if you have one, but either way, a CD isn't very expensive compared to the postage cost of the laptop

Ok, ran the 3 game tests on it with full resolution and AA (I skipped the CPU tests), and this is what I got:

Before:
GPU Temp: 60
Ambient Temp: 55

After:
GPU Temp: 66
Ambient Temp: 65

Oh, also, the GPU was overclocked to 351/653 (automatically detected).
