Review Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M4438G - Page 19

Heat is most certainly the problem of slowdowns. My desktop PC used to slow down mainly because of it

Looks like the 2XHDD version is full of heat issues... Umm, have you tried removing the second HDD? I can't remember if anyone mentioned the results after that...

@Strange Species I presume those voltages are stable? Do they apply automatically after boot and what about battery life with those?
I get my 2HH M3438G by Wednesday of next week. I'm a little worried now that people are having problems with their models. However, if the notebook breaks because of the overheating of the harddrives, doesn't the warranty cover it? I mean F-S can't just go around selling notebooks that break from HDD-overheating and shrug their shoulders to the whole thing.
If the comp breaks because of overheating, the warranty covers it definately (if you havent overclocked or anything else)! But geforce for example reduces its clocks when heating too hot to prevent breaking, thats why the card slows down when reaching 100C. But the thing is that 3438 with 2xHDD doesnt work because of the overheating, you just cant play because of the slowdowns. The comp should tolerate even 24:7 playing without heating problems (for example hitting 100C), but my comp heats in 15mins of playing to 100C! I think FS has totally screwed up the cooling issue of the model!!! The comp should NEVER heat too much with the original clocks!!!
Anyway, I dont know whats the situation with the 1xHDD models :/

DOES ANYONE HAVE A 2xHDD MODEL THAT DOESNT HIT 100C??? OR OVER 90C???

The voltages have been tested as stable, for about 15 minutes testing. I have had no problems whatsoever running at 6x 0.700V, but haven't put it up to game testing at 13x. I'll be doing that very soon with Lineage 2. I think battery life has improved, but since I haven't timed it, there's only guesswork involved.
Are you sure that 15 minutes is sufficient? I'd run Prime for at least 2 hours to be certain
post #366 of 579
Playerdude, I'm 99.9 percent sure that I don't hit the 100 celsius mark, the highest temp I've eyewitnessed is 78 degrees celsius, that was before I undervolted mine, after that I think about 70 degrees is the highest I've got...
The pauses I'm talking about are only something like 0.5 seconds or so, just "hiccups" like I said... and they don't happen in every game. If they do though, you can see them immediately after you have just started the game as well (in WarCraft 3 in-game cinematic, for example).

Have you undervolted your machine yet?? I think you should really try it to see if there is any change in your temps after that, if there isn't, just contact F-S, there MUST be something wrong in your lappy then.
Though I have 2 HDs in "My Amilo", I haven't set up the RAID yet, do you have the RAID in use?
To put it short, what I'm saying is yes, it's possible to have temps below 100 celsius in 2 HD model (what a relief to know, don't you think? ).

As far as undervolting discussion goes, I immediately got an error from Prime when I put the voltage down to what Strange Species says is his lowest achievable maximum VID, and then considering he has a bit lower clock speed CPU in his model, I would think that his number is probably just correct to give stable operation with the given CPU (PM 740, correct?).
My stable VIDs are in my sig.

THANKS RuptuReD!!!
Its a relief to know that you can have OK temps with the 2xHDD model!!!
I havent set up RAID either, only if its not already up in the beginning?
I think Ill just kick FS until I get my lappy run cooler then..
If your highest temp was about 80 with original volts, its would be OK for me =)

...Hope that FS finds out whats wrong with my lappy :/

The lowest voltage setting varies on each processor, not just the different types. When I did my voltage test, two settings below what I have now caused the laptop to crash. One setting below caused 1 prime error in about 13 minutes. What I've got now has not endured a 2 hour test in prime 95, but has just been fine playing Lineage II for over 2 hours. I'll probably do a long test eventually.

While playing, I think temps were between 55-60C for the CPU, while much higher for the GPU. Not sure on exact figures though. As for the video jumping, I did experience some earlier, but that seemed to be when the hard drive was loading something. In my case, I think it's directly related to HDD access, as it does not happen when fully loaded.

Which SATA driver exactly have you used to perform a clean XP install?
I've tried all of them, and still none of my 2 hdd's are detected

Raid option is hardware disabled..
For the 2nd day I can't neither format the disks, nor install XP pro..

Monitoring Temperatures

Hello

Can you tell me some good programs to use for temperature monitoring for laptops?

A friend of mine brought me a new Toshiba Qosmio G15 to install some programs on it. I thought everything was "cool" until I played Unreal Tournament 2004 on it. When I reach the team qualifications, the Arena loads very slowly and while playing, motion and sound is not smooth and continuous. So I want to check if this is an overheating problem.

Here are the specs of the laptop:
Toshiba Qosmio G15
Intel PM750
512 DDR2
GeForce FX 5700 125MB

Download this driver from the FS website:
http://download.fujitsu-siemens.com/...F-9AFE3CABA9E4

After that, unpack it and there's a folder called DrvDisk (or something close to that). Within there are the drivers you need. Copy the whole contents of the directory to a floppy disk (via. external drive). The contents of the floppy disk should be like this:

A:
...IWhateverNumberItWas\
...AMD64\
...txtsetup.oem

It's something like that anyway. Press F6 at the start of XP setup, and after it's loaded you can install. Just requires an external floppy drive, or a modded XP disc. Good luck!

It's very hard to follow all the fragmented temperature input in this thread

Given that this seems to be a big issue, it would be nice if as many as possible posted peak and average temps for their mainboard, CPU, GPU and HDDs together with their hardware setup (battery and/or AC, 1/2 HDDs and HDD RPM speed, 1/2 RAM modules) and eventual modifications (underclocking/overclocking, RAID on/off etc).

Even though temperature increase usually affects all internal components to some extent, I'd for instance be much more worried over higher than average HDD temperatures than CPU/GPU temperature as this would increase the risk of HDD failure and loss of important data...

Good day everyone!

I have been reading this whole thread as i am in love with the M3438G, and i would like to buy one right away. I am a little concerned about the heat issues, but as i will be using mine as a power workstation, i need the raid functionality to speed things up, and the 6800go is just too good to be true...

I'd have a lot of questions, but first, can you please tell me on thing: Can you watch a whole dvd (let's say a 1:45h movie) with one battery charge?

And, are there other annoying problems except the heat issue? And is there anyone with a 2xHDD raid setup that is not experiencing heat issues?

Thanks a lot guys, and please reply soon as i'm really looking foward to buying this lappy!

Cheers everyone,
Alex.

I use Hardware Sensors Monitor, available here. It's not free of charge but you can use it for a 7-day evaluation period (or simply crack it)...
Strange Species, thanks a lot!
It turned out that i've been using the wrong drivers

*EDIT* the problems are not over yet
Now, after formatting the drive, Windows asks for the "via raid combo driver diskette".. What files do i need?
Does anyone use Centrino Hardware Control for monitoring his Amilo?
SpeedFan (free) can monitor things like the HDD temp, the nvidia control panel can monitor GPU temps, and CHC can monitor CPU temps. To answer your question John, I use CHC in mine, and it works well. I keep it in 6x mode except when gaming, and it's very easy to switch. Also, another feature it has is estimated remaining battery life

Lualyrr:
You should only need the files in the DrvDisk directory like I mentioned above, and that should be it.

"SiSoft Sandra 2005" is a superb computer monitor program. Tells you absolutely shít-loads of info, values, and status reports for all the inner working parts of your computer, including temperatures and more besides.

>> SiSoftware Sandra 2005 SR2a <<

^ The Lite version is completely free.

I agree, it has made for a confusing read thus far. Ideally more info about the various config's used - such as the things you've suggested - are needed to put each individual case into context. Maybe a new thread is needed to keep everything neat and organised?
Ok, my 1 HDD system had a max temperature of 78C on the GPU when gaming. The CPU was way below 60C. Undervolted CPU btw.
We could all post our temps to Kierans thread of course, or would it really be better to start an own thread for the reports, I don't know...

BTW, do you guys get the SpeedFan to give out the temp for both HDs, I only get it to show the temp for the first one (I know most don't have 2 HDs, but those who have). When I wrote this, the program showed 47 celsius as the temp for the first HD, if anyone is interested...
