Review Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M4438G - Page 22

NTSC to PAL

Hello

My question is not directly related to the mx438g laptop I hope there is no problem with that.

Can someone tell me if it is possible to change a NTSC laptop tv-tuner into a PAL if it is not supported by default? For example a solution I thought is by updating the firmware of the tv-tuner.

@Promethe: BTW where did you find this version of M4438G:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) M 760 2.0 GHz (Sonoma) / 2GB DDR2 533 / DVD R/RW (+/-) DL / 200GB (2x100 GB 7200 RPMs SEGATEs Momentus) RAID 0 / 17" CrystalView 1920x1200 / ExpressCard 36|54 slot / HDTV Tuner / NVidia GeForce Go6800 256MB VRAM / BT USB Dongle / Windows Media Center Edition 2005 Emerald

Is it a special order for you, because I haven't found such a version anywhere in the UK.

Can somebody that has upgraded the RAM in the 3438 or 4438 tell me which type of 1GB modules are compatible?
What brand of modules are in it actually? Hynix?

Is it there a noticeable difference between 400Mhz and 533Mhz in eg. games?

From looking at the model number on the internet, I think it's Samsung memory.

I think, from what I can tell, these will work. However, I'm not sure and I think it'd be best if someone could clarify it:

Everest Ultimate Edition 2005 claims this to be the memory in my machine: Infineon 64T64020HDL5A (2*512MB sticks).

However, a quick google search can't seem to be able to find any info about it on the net. Don't have interest to make more extensive research yet.

SiSoft Sandra tells you all the details about the components in your computer, including makes, types, speeds, sizes, temps, everything.

http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.ht...64&langx=en&a=

Could someone also please tell me the CPU Arithmetic and Multimedia benchmark scores using Sandra. too?

Thanks
AFAIK Sandra does not tell you the actual brand of the memory. Use CPU Z, it tells you everything, even the date the module was made

Great link for DDR2 vs. DDR1 notebook memory: http://www.legitreviews.com/article.php?aid=212

*EDIT* does the *438G support dual channel?
CPU Arithmetic:
dhrystones - 6.862
whetstones - 2.228 / 2.850

CPU multimedia:
integer - 15.270
floating - 16.820

Memory bandwith:
integer - 3.009
floating - 3.003
Everest/SiSoft couldn't tell me how many pins there were on the RAM modules (or at least if they did, it was hard to find). I had to open up the back and count them. 200 pins apparently, which definitely helps in my search for 1GB RAM.

And yes, they support dual channel memory. Mine has a combined bandwidth of 6400MB/s according to one of those system info programs.
Could someone tell me what is this dual memory support? It has to do with RAM right? I only ask this because I will have my local computer store to put two Kingston's 1GB (533MHz) memories in my M3438G and if this 'dual memory support' is something that you must switch on, I'd like to know about it so that I can inform it to the computer store. Or will it automatically be on?
The dual memory thingy is when two RAM chips are inserted in to the system, when they have exactly the same specification (e.g. 2x 1GB 533Mhz, like what you said your computer store is inserting). The memory bandwidth is then doubled, because (I assume) it can access both chips simultaneously. Apparently, the effects are only really apparent in benchmarks.

Hi to all again.
Yes,changing memory modules is no problem.I've put my ones away and ordered brand new 1Gb memory ddr2 533Mhz.I think that original ones are only 400Mhz.
Works perfect....
I've got this:

Has anybody tested the INFRARED device on taht laptop? Because on my one I didn't find any drivers on CD for that and it's not installed in Windows XP originaly.
Good news for RAM then. However, I have a feeling that the infrared is not accessible, but only acts with the remote control. Not certain though, and I have a device I'd like to be able to use infrared with, if at all possible.
Yes, the infrared in the M3438G is a "Customized IR" according to the manual which though sounds cool actually means that the port only works with the remote that comes with the machine. That's a real downer, if they put IR in to the lappy they should have make it a "real" InfraRed port. It's not like they're expensive to make or anything.

Don't know about the actual technical aspects of IrDa though, and whether it could be somehow used with devices other than the remote if some "magical" drivers where installed or something like that.

Perhaps some IR "guru" could shed light on this one? (please do it, someone)

I got my M3438G today. Right now, I'm waiting for the battery to get full before I switch the notebook on for the first time. So all of you are probably using this thing without battery inside. But I got to thinking, if you take the battery away won't there be a hole in the bottom of the notebook then. I mean won't dust go to the space the battery was in. And I can't see any protective lid either. What's the deal?

Nice one, thanks for that Arcano mate!
¡No problem!

I forgot to say mine is a PM730, 2x512MB @ 400 Mhz. Otherwise data is meaningless.

I have sent a request to moderators about investigate possibility with Fujitsu forum section. I suggest you all do the same. My review is getting too long
post #440 of 579
Sounds like a good idea to me, but how does one suggest it?
