Review Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M4438G - Page 26

post #501 of 579
hello, one of the driver I have tried to update is the BIO driver, when I trie to unzip the Windows version I find the problem I have told before. And I have downloaded the DOS version but I have no idea how to proceed.
The others drivers I want to update too are the InstantOn 3in1 and the Nvidia GeForce.
P.S: by the way, are you Spanish? (because of your avatar)

Can you post a link to this review please?

Thanks

Download the BIOS driver that says it's for a CD (bootable).

Edit:

Actually, thinking about it. If you're not that experienced with computers, do not attempt to update the BIOS, as it's risky.
post #504 of 579
First of all, the BIOS is not a driver. I agree with StrangeSpecies, if you don't really know what you are doing leave it alone, and if I recall right some people around here tried the new version and didn't find any difference.

InstantOn is an application, and should install like any other program (haven't tried myself though).

As for the graphic driver, I prefer to uninstall the previous one manually thru Control Panel, reboot, cancel when Windows detects new hardware, and then just execute "setup.exe" and follow the dialogs.

And yep, I'm Spanish.

Anyway no problem with the 3438 in stock. Almost, almost wish I had a 3438 right now.
What was the problem with your screen? Dead pixels, light leakage or something else? Would be interesting to know before I pull the trigger on the M4438...
post #506 of 579
Belch's screen had dead pixels appearing about one and a half months after getting it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I think he said.

Freezes during games

Hi guyz!

As is said i bought a M3438G, and all i can say is that i'm damn happy with it!
I have the following setup:

Pentium M 760
2x512 DDR2
Geforce 6800GO 256MB
2x80GB SATA RAID 0

The lappy does get hot, especially to the right of the pad where one of the harddrives resides. It is ok thou, you can't wear it on your lap, but it's ok to type or play.

The only problem i've noticed so far is within games. While playing Far Cry or Vampire Bloodlines or Doom, at 20-30 second intervals the game just freezes for a second, and then continues normally. I think it might be related to harddrive access, because it happens for example in far cry when i fire my weapon the first time (maybe it tries to load a sound or something).

Anyway, are any of you experiencing this problem? If so, is there any workaround?

Thanks!

Alex,
proud owner of FS M3438G!

Ok, good to know it's not something more serious...

BTW, here's yet another review, this time of the M3438 @ notebookreview.com...

There are two main ways to reduce that. The first is to get more RAM, but you have 1GB already, so that's not going to be a problem. The second way is to defragment your hard drive. This really does seriously affect it. My recommendation would be to purchase a program called Diskeeper, which is an excellent defragmenter. Alternatively, you can download an older 'Lite' edition, which is probably enough for your needs here:

My harddrive was very recently defragmented. I do not think that is it. And also, i have checked ram usage while playing, and it never goes beyond 850mb. I guess the problem is somewhere else... I will keep investigating.

I've told earlier that the GPU of my 2xHDD amilo m 3438G hit the 100C line and caused a short slowdown (could say pause) in the game at about 20-30sec interwalls to force the temps to go down, after the pause the gpu speeded up and overheated and slowed down again, I think this is your problem too.. I think you hit 100C too!!!

The best way to monitor your temps would be that you run Farcry in a window and have your gpu temps on screen at the same time.

If your problem wasnt about the temps please forgive me..

My laptop began to work properly only after changing the Geforce to a new one. (Temps a bit above 80 now)

What version of ForceWare you have, ubikutz? Have you reinstalled Windows?
post #514 of 579
Defragment again anyway (don't use the Windows in-built defragmenter). Also, if Far Cry has the option to pre-load data, then try that. I haven't played the game, so wouldn't know.
post #515 of 579
I have done a fresh install of Windows yes, the games have the latest pathces, and i have the latest geforce drivers from the fujitsu siemens site.
It is not connected to Far Cry alone, i also experience those hickups in Vampire - Bloodlines too. It's damn weird. I'm afraid that it may be a power saving feature of the harddrives of Geforce 6800 that kicks in and causes the pausing, but there is no way to know for sure. I don't even know how to start diagnosing this
post #516 of 579
How long are these pauses that you're getting exactly? I had some strange micropauses in some games before but they went away after I installed the 80.40 ForceWare from laptop2go.

Do you have any programs running in the tray for example that could cause your problems, do you have the RAID set up? What exactly happens when these pauses happen, give a detailed description. Does the sound stutter or is it just the video output that pauses?

Can you see the harddrive access light lighting up when the pauses happen? Does the HD make access noise?

Sorry about all the questions, but it really is kinda hard to know were to start...

A little off-topic here, but this soon-to-be released Sony Vaio BX570 seems to be very similair to the Amilo Mx438G. The entry price for this model will be $1.580 (w/o dedicated GPU?), which isn't too bad. In fact, I'll wait until October when it's released to see how it will compare to the Mx438G before I finally make up my mind. Decisions, decisions

Detailed specs link

* 17" WUXGA or 17" WXGA+ LCD with XBRITE Technology
* Intel Pentium M Processor (2MB L2 Cache / 533MHz FSB)
* Up to 240GB (120GB x 2) Serial ATA [5400rpm] HDD
* Multi Function Bay with optional HDD or optical bay units
* Built-in biometric fingerprint sensor
* Built-in Bluetooth & 802.11b/g WLAN
* Built-in Trusted Platform Module (TPM) TCG Ver. 1.1b
* Built-in MOTION EYE built-in Camera

I'm not sure though how its (optional) graphics card would stand up to the 256MB GeForce 6800Go:

ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700 PCI Express 128MB Dedicated Memory with HyperMemory12 Supporting up to 256MB (Intel 915PM)

You are very right to ask those questions :
- i have raid setup
- no programs in tray except fraps, and the systray driver icons (sound and printer)
- the pause is very very short, just about a second or less, framerate output drops to 0 and than it goes back to normal. I think it's just the video that pauses, sound goes on, and than video catches up, by skipping some frames. - I tried, and i saw no access from the harddrive, and i think that this is normal, as all should be loaded in ram, after the level is loaded. This is why Far Cry requires 1gb of ram to be run propertly.

It seems it might be a video problem, and i should try new drivers. I currently have the latest version from the FS support site, and i noticed that forceware downloaded from nvidia does not work

I will go to laptop2.go and see if it makes any difference.

Thanks!

Later edit: The laptop2go site does not work. Is there any way to install directly the latest drivers from the nvidia site?
post #519 of 579
The url is: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...showtopic=7427

I myself installed them with the "Pieter's mobile INF modified for v80.40" available on the same page, of course this is not to say that they would be the optimal ones or anything, just what I'm using at the moment.

Regarding installing the ForceWare itself there is a nice guide about them here: http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_1.html

I did the steps mentioned here: http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_4.html in the "Old Nvidia Driver Removal" section before I installed mine.

You can try installing the 80.40 of course, and I recommend you do what I mentioned above if you decide to do so, but I can't promise that it'll fix the problem.

Have you checked the temperature of the GPU when playing games from the Nvidia Control panel?
post #520 of 579
Thanks for the info, but i will not use any modded or experimental drivers, but only as a last result. I need my machine to be razor stable

I will check the temperatures while in game, and report back my findings.

Thanks a lot for the help!
