Hi.
M3438G has WXGA+ screen (resolution 1440*900) while the M4438G has WUXGA (1920*1200).

No parts changed yet and running still, but haven't had it very long after all (got it sometime in july).

Hi guys!!!

Ive spent house reading pretty much every post in this oversized thread and the best part of 5 solid days on trying to get XP Pro on my M3438.....

Right now I have a slipstreamed XP PRo (No SP's - tried with but they were even less sucessfull) with SATA drivers, however my 4 or 5 attempts at installing have left me with a system dogged by instability.

-> Fresh installs have extreme issues with updating to SP two (from an official SP2 upgrade CD)

-> 2 installs during startup insist on doing random disk integrity checks. Tons of errors are inevitably found, fixed at which point the machine will never start again. One time I fixed it booting off of an install CD and copying across some dlls another time it just looops and I had to reinstall.

-> general system32 dll issues – random 0 file size dlls.

-> one install stayed up for 2 days – almost had the set-up as I needed it – and then died to point of no return.

So where can I go from here. There is no way I can use home for the sort of work i do...

First question which drivers has everyone been slipstreaming in? Could all of these problems have been caused by these drivers...

Does anyone have a working iso for a pro install? Im totally legit obviously as all of our lics are covered by our companies pool of serial numbers (I would use my own serial on the install).

Can anyone generally give me any tips on getting this baby going?

Mucho gratis in advance!!!!!!

I'd try a non-slipstreamed XP Pro installation. Obtain a USB floppy drive, and copy the SATA drivers on to it. Install XP Pro, loading the drivers from the disk. Install SP1. Install SP2. Download the network versions from the microsoft site to do this. After that, install the drivers from the Fujitsu-Siemens website. Then do Windows Update. Hopefully after that you should have a fully working system.

Hello all, thanks for your response S-Species. I think I am now stable so I will stick some notes down here incase someone has the same probs....

It would appear that all of my probs stemmed from having put the HD's into RAID 0 config through the initial XP home install. In the end I reinstalled XP home - switched everything off - so it was just 2 indipendant HDs then when back to my slipstreamed XP pro with no SPs. After that I added FS drivers from the DVD and added in the SPs from a SP2 CD I had from work.

My next question is which graphics drivers everyone is using to best effect?

Thanks for your support Strange Species!

I use the 78.11 driver with modiefied .inf from laptopvideo2go. Slightly over clocked it gives me about 3950 points in 3dMark05. Avoid the 81.8x driver series as they seems to function poorly on the FS Mx438g.

Windows Xp.. sigh

I've been trying for the last 11 hours to get Windows XP Pro onto my M4438G with no luck.. when i finally figured out which driver to slipstream onto the disc in order to find the i get past the copying part, then it shows the windows load screen for a second and then i get a BSOD which is telling me to check my harddrive

Doesnt it install the driver to the windows boot if its slipstreamed onto the disc? :/

Ps. I've been following this site when slipstreaming.

If I were you I'd buy an external USB floppy disk drive, or borrow one. They're not expensive and may help in the future.

If you don't mind the extra weight and size, FS is far superior due to its 6800

Where can I get a TV-tuner to the 3438?

Its hard to find express card but you could always try searching. An USB adapter is easier to find and will of course work.

Can you be more specific about the battery time? How long can you watch a DVD for unplugged at medium brightness?
Alienware is selling this laptop as their Area 51m 5700.

Sorry if that's old news...I didn't want to look through ~40 pages to find that statement.

Can´t decide

I´ve read almost all the thread in this forum but I still can´t decide if I should buy the 3438 or the 4438.

I need a laptop for graphic work like Autocad,3D Studio Max, Inventor, Photoshop...
Should I go for a faster processor M770 2,13GHz but a WXGA+ display or a M760 2,0GHz with a WUXGA? I would take both the machines with 2gb Ram.

Hey Zedith...

I recently got an M3438G and think its pretty good. I use it mainly for Actionscripting (flash), photoshop, Autocad and illustrator....i find it handles them with no probs...

I also play a couple of games ... Age of Empires 3 and Call of Duty....no probs with these either...

I use to have a Sager and the a couple of differences are: 1, The M3438G deosnt get that hot (the sager use to be like an oven) 2, The build quality of the Sager was a bit better...but only slightly...

Anyway, i think you wont go wrong with the M3438G....

Just my opinion
