Thanks for the headsup! I wonder if the drivers that come out for the 8887 will apply to the 8886 for whatever they have that's the same, lol. We'll have to see how that's organized :-)

Hmm, the files inside seem to be the same as the older driver release, just more of them in the new file.

I don't have any USB 2.0 devices, so I can't tell if the new packaging does any better with the install. Anyone tried it yet?

whose

Whose used the new usb drivers, and has anyone noticed any difference? The same goes with the bios updates? Better? Worse? The same?

I have installed and used the new USB 2.0 drivers on my 5660 running Windows XP SP1. The driver is newer (7/8/2002 on the driver date as compared to 6/5/2002 for the old one) and digitally signed by Microsoft WHQL but they still don't install using the setup utility. I had to extract the files out of the msusb_xp.cab file and then force the driver update. The new driver is listed as being from VIA where as the other one was listed as being from Microsoft. I have not noticed any difference with the new drivers yet (performance or functionality) but I have not done much with the USB except for mouse and keyboard. Everything still works and I was able to borrow a USB 2.0 external hard drive and it seemed to function correctly but I didn’t do much testing except to copy some files back and forth before I had to give it back. As far as the BIOS update goes I have not seen an update for my 5660 yet, but it has been my experience that when a company releases a BIOS update there is usually a good reason for it. (but not always, need to see the release notes on it describing the changes made if they have any notes for the update) A good rule of thumb is if you don’t know what the new one fixes and your not having any problems then don’t update, but that does really take the excitement out of life. If you want to live on the edge then just do it.

Agreed about the bios updates...

I'd like to see the person who was having trouble installing a USB2 hard drive try doing it with the new USB2 drivers... Hope they see this!

Actually, I d/l the new usb2.0 drivers, and they didnt install, so I'm still using the original one from the cd. I did installed the new video drivers from the website though. I dont have benchmark numbers, but they seemed to run ok so far.

The usb drivers didn't install? Hmm... what do you mean? Like they installed and didn't work? Or the install file didn't work? Did you try going through the device manager?

i'm trying it out on my 8886 right now. i'm a little confused as far as what exactly i need to force an update on. do i do it for all usb controllers and root hubs or just the root hubs but not the controllers ?

adam, could someone from sager please clarify ?

I remember I didn't know which either, and I just forced one on one of each to see which would actually recognize the drivers. THe ones that did, I updated. I can't remember which that was, lol.
