Acer Ferrari 4000 and Windows XP Pro 64

I am new to the forum, drawn by discussions to what probably will be my next notebook. My Dell D600 is unusable unless docked with a full keyboard. (I leave it at work). The misplacement of the Delete key and the mushy keyboard drives me crazy. If the keyboard is full size, why must certain manufacturers deviate from the IBM layout? However, my Sony Vaio PIII 600 has continued to serve me well, but it's time to move on to gain some speed. So it was going to be a another Sony until I saw the specs (and keyboard) of the 4000.

I have read the forums discussing this laptop but I have a few questions/issues that have not been addressed.

1. There has been no discussion of Windows 64. I have seen it for less than $150. Do you think Acer will include it soon instead of the 32 bit version?
2. Why doesn't anyone seem concerned about it not being included?
3. If you bought a copy of 64, would you go with a boot option between the versions?
4. Anyone know whether the 4000's components are compatible with Windows 64?
5. Heat. I've seen mention of some heat issues coming up through the keyboard. Anyone find an issue re: heat coming out the bottom? I have some assets I would like to protect.

Thanks for the help (if I get any!)

when I upgrade to x64 i am not going to dual boot. I am not doing it right now, because I want to just use the laptop for the summer in the 32-bit version. Acer has its own technology upgrade program where you pay 40 or 50 bucks for a copy of x64 and then they give you all the drivers and what not. Its no in place yet for the 4000 but is in place for the 3200 and 3400. I don't have the link off the top of my head, buts its on the acer site somewhere. It will be nice, because Acer will give full support to the upgrade to x64. Once the program is in place for the 4000 i will prob upgrade.

In terms of heat this laptop seems VERY cool. if anything it just gets a little luke warm on the plam rests. The parts that get semi warm are near the fan (my hands are never over here) and the touchpad. You can feel the heat on the touchpad if you put your whole palm on it, but with just a finger you don't really notice it. All in all, this laptop is very cool compared to others I have used.

I just finished upgrading my 4000 to x64 Pro.
All devices work great. No problems whatsoever.

64-bit drivers are here (took me quite a while to find them):

xp pro 64

Thanks Martingale. Did you obtain the OS from Acer? Tell us what differences you notice running in 64 bit. And, most importantly, how do you like the 4000?

cmlevy,
1) No, it's a standard Win x64 Pro.
2) No noticable difference. Win x64 Pro has improved quite a bit comparing to what it was half a year ago.
3) It's great.

how did u go about getting XPx64 and do you have to do a clean install or can you just upgrade?
flypig687,
1) Corporate license.
2) Clean install, reformatted 100% of the hard drive as single NTFS partition. I do not think upgrade is possible (or necessary). Of course, you may have a dual boot system if you want.

so martingale you only need those 10 files to get the ferrari up and running? I downloaded all of them, and I am axiously awaiting my Windows xp x64 bit edition...

Ferrari 4000 and winX64

I have the Bios version 3A17 on ferrari and I haven't sean where to download the 3A19 version from.
me too, anyone else having trouble finding the bios update?
I couldn't find that newer BIOS version either. My guess is that it hasn't been released yet. It might had been preloaded on the last manufactured machines though.

That said, I'm a very happy user of Windows XP Pro x64 since a couple of hours ago Amazingly enough all the devices work with the provided 64-bit drivers: Bluetooth, WiFi, etc. No complains here.

My BIOS version is 3A15.

sweet, so it works good then? Can you play any games on it?
And did you happen to find the 64 bit Ferrari Wallpaper?
I have bios version 3A17

Where did you get the copy of Windows XP Pro x64 from? Do all the common programs (office, norton, etc...) work on it? Does it seem faster that the 32 bit version of xp pro?

Games:
I've tried a demo of Battlefield 2 and the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 (yeh older version). Both are 32-bit and I haven't found any problem with them yet. In fact, I seem to get more frames on both.

Performance:
As I said, the system feels faster and more responsive even when using regular 32-bit software. That's quite impressing taking into account that Windows is doing some housekeeping to be able to run 32-bit processes side by side with 64-bits ones.

Something interesting I've read is that CPU-intensive tasks like compression/decompression might be executed much faster. It seems that somebody compiled a command-line only of 7Zip in 64-bit mode and the preliminary results showed a 20% performance increase. I can't wait to see more releases of x64 applications. They seem to unleash the potential of the Turion64 processor

Software:
I haven't tried Office or Norton AV yet. Office should be fine. I've read that since firewall and antivirus software talk with the kernel, they have to be 64-bit only. I don't know if Norton is avaliable or not.

I also tried Mozilla Firefox for x64 and it seemed amazingly fast. Problem is that it's currently based on alpha code and I couldn't get installed the extensions I want, so for now I'm staying safe on Firefox 1.0.4 32-bit.

Where did I get XP x64? Well, I wanted to check out XP x64 asap, so I downloaded it -and I am not talking about MSDN here - As soon as it's feasible to get a legal one from Acer, I'll be the first one

Acer has started to sell the Acer Ferrari 4000 w/ Windows XP 64-bit Pro pre-installed in the UK. http://www.acer.co.uk/acereuro/page4...crc=3156822727

Even the Acer TM 4400 (Turion 64 and X700 (64MB)) is sold with WinXP64 in the UK. So it makes me think that Windows XP 64-bit Pro should run perfect on all acer Turion 64 notebooks! Don't know about older models though aswell as the new 5020 series and 5010 series. But I think this is the first retail notebook to be Windows XP 64-bit Pro certified.

It's really cool that Acer is preloading it in the UK. Too bad that is not happening in Spain, at least right now.

So I guess I'll have to get mine here:
http://global.acer.com/support/windo...sional-x64.htm

They say the CDs should be shipping before end of August and they will bill me the handling and shipping from Singapore

Do anybody knows if, as it is implied in the page, this program ends on July, 31th? So exactly what would replace it for people still interested??

I found out today that WinRAR and Daemon Tools both released a beta for 64-bit, so when i get home from vacation tommarow ill prob install x64. Anyone knoe if RMclock and mobilemeter will work in x64?
I am trying to download the drivers posted earlier and all of them unzip fine except the last one (the VGA chipset driver). WinRAR tells me that the archive is corrupt...anyone else have this issue or know where I can get the chipset drivers for 64-bit?
I had the exact same problem, except I couldnt get the chipset, VGA, lan, or sound files to extract properly. Same corruption on all of them. I ended up just going to each of the manufacturers websites to get the drivers. Also, the AMD website was very helpful with a list of companies that have software and drivers for Windows x64. The VGA & Southbridge drivers can be found at https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...ge&folderID=27 .... This should clear up any issues you may have with the missing chipset driver file.
