Acer Ferrari 4000 and Windows XP Pro 64 - Page 2

hey scuba so you got all the drivers, what about the Ferrari Wallpaper 64 bit?
I didn't see any 64-bit ferrari wallpaper, but im not married to it. Everything seems to be working pretty good so far, cept for the scrolling problem
post #23 of 39
scrolling problem fixed. It turns out that it was GFX driver problem. I was using some modded 5.6 cats made by NGO and the refresh rate could only be set at 1hz, and the refresh rate fix tool provided could not recognize the OS. So i just installed the drivers avlible from Acer on the page earlier in the thread. Now everything works fine

Well, Acer Panam (the 'US' site) has officially unofficially started supporting Windows XP x64. They put the drivers on their site (all of which work, including the chipset one). The link to the drivers is http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/for...d=3394#results

Other than the thrill of it all, have you noticed any performance increase or 64 bit features that would justify the switching over from 32 bit. On the otherhand, now that the drivers seem to be straightened out, is there any downside with any applications? The mags seem to be still saying there is no practical justification to switch. From your perspective, has it been worth it?

well for me its seems that programs are just handled better by this OS. When the crash, its not hard to recover from at all and stuff rarely crashes as much as it did on 32-bit. This could just be because its based on the windows 2003 server code, but idk. The computer also seems to load and boot up much faster with simialr programs installed. The only major problem I have had so far is that there is no virtual drive program avalible. It should come out soon hopefully as Daemon Tools has released a beta, but I like Alcohol myself. Right now I am using a modified version of filedisk that some guy compiled in 64-bit and it works for only iso and cue and also doesn't seem to allow multiple disk installs. Im just holding out on installing some games i have on iso untill daemon or alcohol releases a beta to the public. Other that that its seems to run great, no complaints at all. Not much differenece between 32-bit and 64-bit as far as i can tell, but hopefully some good native 64-bit software will be released in the next 6-8 months

Sometimes it takes some searching to find out how to get some programs or a beta that you need for x64, like winRAR or NOD32. go to www.planetamd64.com for some really good help on findin app info. So far have had only minor compatability problems, and most of them solved after some google searching.

I have a quick question....I downloaded all of the 64 bit drivers off of Acer's website...DO I need any of the 32 bit drivers for other hardware?

This will be the first time I do something like this, so I ask for some much needed guidance. I would hate to install all the xp 64 programs and drivers and not know that I needed some 32 bit drivers to make everything work correctly.

Thank you!

The drivers on their site will be all you need unless you are installing some third party piece of hardware like a pcmcia sound card or something.

Received my Windows XP x64 CD from Acer Tech Advancement program 2 days ago. Installed it on my second partition, then all the 64 bit drivers without glitches. After booting up i found all the peripherals working. Sweet.
I proceeded to install aVast Anti Virus, WinRAR & Nero and they are working as expected.
Instaled 3D mark 2005 and ran it, GPU score is 2353 (compared to 2342 in XP 32 bit).
Installed tweaked ATI driver from NGO and immediately saw improvement to 2368. Using ATI Tray tool I then overclocked the GPU to 390:375 just for the sake of it. Wow! Final 3dMark score is 2542

I like my laptop cool so then i proceed to undervolt my Turion. Bummer, RMClock is not working
After google a bit i obtained CrystalCPUID
and found it though is not as slick as RMClock but its working. I end up setting the Auto Management features to 10 - 1.325(Max) and 5 - 0.950(Min)

I'm a bit overwhelmed at this point because i didnt expect installing Windows x64 bit can be this easy on this machine.
Now if only i can find a good Firewall program to replace this sucky Windows Firewall...

I'm going to install some games and test some more but im convinced pretty soon i'm going to get rid off Windows XP Pro alltogether and there'll be two partitions in my Ferrari. First is Windows XP x64 and the 2nd is Linux x86_64 =)

Goodbye 32 bit OS

Interesting, i was reading an article about windows xp pro x64 edition to see what's changed in detail, and the conclusions the reviewers came to in terms of performance show this:
Quote:
From our tests, we have come to the conclusion that with the new operating system, current 32-bit applications (including games) will have a performance decrease of 1% - 8% although in some special cases there may also be a performance increase of 5%. The benefits of the 64-bit architecture come into their own with 64-bit applications where we managed to see over 49% performance increase and there is still room for improvement. The ability to simultaneously run more applications than ever before, makes this release necessary for the power users.
I guess this suggests that the real advantages of the new x64 edition will become more obvious as programs are written specifically for the x64 architecture. To check the whole review out: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Revi...13615&PageId=1

Thats interesting. I have had installed for about a week now and EVERYTHING seems to load and perform faster. All the drivers/hardware work great. My only problem is that I cant get my iPod to be recognized. Anytime I plug it in to one of my USB ports, it shows that it found new hardware, then several seconds later, the computer freezes. I have the latest version of iTunes installed. If anyone knows how to fix it, that would be great.
hmm no problems with my ipod, maybe try reinstalling itunes?
do we know of any problems with the XP x64 and canon PIXMA MP130 drivers as well as Creative Audigy 2 ZS notebook drivers?
I have tried reinstalling iTunes several times, but I think it has something to do with how Windows is recognizing my iPod... I wonder if it is my version of Windows x64 or something to do with my Ferrari 4000....
I hear that cannon is screwing x64 users and no cannon drivers have been released, that might be just for scanners and printers, idk, don't quote me on that
post #36 of 39
I got the iTunes/iPod thing fixed... Turns out I had to reformat my iPod first. Worked like a charm .

It is on the website ( i never noticed it first time round!) but i have yet to see it stocked on any website or anything.
Going from home to pro costs around £90 more so x64 will probably be a little more. So considering you can pick up the x64 version (OEM) for just under £100, its probably more worthwhile buying it seperate, especially considering that 'some' programs run at a lower speed or not at all in x64.

My transformation to XP Pro x64 is almost complete.
Today i stumbled upon Tiny Firewall website and found that they have released the Tiny Firewall x64 version, so i quickly download the free 90 days trial and install it on my machine.
It runs ok and seems fast so far but to be honest i'm a bit confuse about the configuration interface, guess it will take sometime to get familiared.
Has anyone ran Tiny firewall before? Is it a keeper?
At $99 it is more expensive than competitors so I probably going to run the trial for awhile before deciding to make a purchase.

You can get the XP-64 Pro preinstalled from ShopAcer, in the UK, https://sslrelay.com/s77548008.onean...iew.shopscript they also offer it with 2gb of RAM, im still trying to contact them as it says that its 4*512mb, and from what i know the ferrari only has 2 RAM slots. Thats where im getting mine from, and with XP-64.
