Well, that topic will draw in all of those frustrated posters. You know, those sick of hearing about how everyone complains about the weight of the notebook. Well, those people are probably you. Am I right? You guys all like to say to those complainers "You knew what you were getting when you bought it." "It says right there on the website that it is 12~lbs. and knowing you, it'll probably weigh in at 14lbs." Yes, thank you alienware for telling us customers about the weight of the portable desktop. It really was clearly stated everywhere I look. Now, the issue that I have is not actually with the weight of the computer itself, it is something else. Something alienware never told me or showed me a picture of. Something I failed to read when scouring their website for months creating my ultimate configuration. This problem is with the power pak. REALLY MY GOD, WHAT THE F|_|CK IS UP WITH THAT MONSTER. Now, when I opened my box and peared into its dark contents, I was suprised and thankful that they sent a carrying case with it. I really did miss that when I ordered it, so I wasn't expecting it at all. However, when I go to carry my illegal alien around with me (like I did at school for the last month or so to play CS:S on the school internet) the beast of a pak never fails to bulge out of the side, appearing as if it is trying to escape the forging holds of the case. If I do not carry the pak in my case, it appears slender and sleek, even with the cheap bag. However, it is when I have the pak in the case that I look like I'm smuggling a leprechaun! I know what you are going to say now. Instead of telling me about what I mentioned before about the weight, you are now going to tell me "Well, dumbass, what the hell did you expect to power all of that hardware." It had never occurred to me that a brick (yes that is what I call it, "the brick", since it essentially matches one dimensionally and physically (in weight)) would be necessary. Sorry for my lack of intellectual/psychic capacities. Why does no one else discuss this topic? Is it an alien conspiracy? haha. The last thing that bothers me about the brick is that it becomes extremely hot at times. Look at the pretty yellow label and read "Be careful! May become hot." Oh, hot. Is that what I smell? I thought that the neighbor was burning tires for a second there. Yes, you know what I'm talking about. There is a distinct smell it makes if it gets really hot, similar to burning plastic (Wait! Case is plastic, gets real hot, burning plastic, it all fits!!) I don't mind the heat when its just sitting there on the ground, but when I put it in my bag I worry! What is that brick that warns about its heat going to do with the rest of my stuff? Sorry folks, I don't eat cooked mice, as tasty as it sounds. That is my only concern about the brick, that it could damge my other equipment or possibly burn myself (don't touch the bottom!). I wonder if alienware would cover the damages if something bad would happen with their brick. Well, I really don't want to check and see if that happens. So, in conclusion I guess, the lappy's weight, a non-issue. I knew about this from the beginning. No problems there. However, that pak is something else. Its like adopting a girl from Korea only to find out when she arrives that she is 6 months pregnant. I didn't sign up for that! Please respond. I look forward to reading people's responses, or talking to the other interesting people like me! Oh, I hope you laughed at least once during this long read.

Me was clearly which it is heavy. Also some is in it... and a Desktop replacement! Remember....
If I correctly understood now all this. And because of the heat... is me also all the same... main thing of everything runs... now which other one I thinks by the heat the color separated... is however still fully contently with that 7700....

Enjoyed your post!

Yeah, the brick is definitely construction material - I have two of them so I don't have to carry them around to the office and back. One of them even makes a loud buzzing noise at times - so I leave that one at work

I agree. why couldn't they apply the alienware treatment to the power brick as well and give it a better cosmetic appearance? But, if they did that we'd probably have to pay another 200 bucks for it. Thank god i have the backpack so i have room for everything

What else can you fit in there besides the laptop? Are books possible? Is it less of a strain if it is on your back instead of your shoulder? Yes. I really would like the conceal my brick from the public, because that is the only embarrassing aspect of pullilng out my laptop. If you plan on decorating it, don't use stickers! Wouldn't that be special to have a ty-dyed brick because the different colors of the melted stickers you put on blended together to create your new burnt hippie one! And so no one takes offense, the 'you' is a general one, not to garfield in retrospect to the stickers. But if he could respond to the questions about the backpack, I would appreciate it.

i loaded up my backpack for a lan party; it weighed 25lbs including kb/mouse/cables, etc. will post pics later.

Yes it is less starin on your back. It actually make the lappy feel decently light. I haven't put any books in it yet, but right now i have the floppy drive, every cable and adaptor to connect the laptop to almost anything, and a couple cds. Im going to see if i can fit my external harddrive in the back pack along with the laptop and everything else. Its a tall pack, not a deep one. But it has lots of useful pouches and pockets.

...i have a targus XL backpack.. i used it for school i had a laptop wifi router power brick 2nd battery mouse and 2-3 med-large books with it as well as paper and various othe things... we guessed it was like 30-40lbs not really that bad on ur back..but why is everyone complaining about the size and heat of this thing? i mean look at the name DESKTOP REPLACNMENT i mean they are shoving something that is supposed 2 take up like 4-5cuft with plenty of circulation and not supposed 2 move into a 17in case with little to no circulation and running on a battery what do you honestly expect out of it?

"Desktop Replacement" is just a fansy excuse.
I agree. Desktop replacement says it all.

That would be the Sentia...The 7700 is labeled as a "desktop replacement". How much does you average mid-tower case weigh...25lbs....and thats just the case.
.........wow...what kinda case are you buying? my whole computer weight less than that i think....but even still i hate all this complaining you cant have this much power in a small case or lightweight

Why carry around a DTR or even a desktop when you can throw a server in one of those army style backpacks? I throw my Dell Poweredge 2650 server in my backpack and away I go. You should see the dirty looks I get when I fire it up on the commuter train (yes they have electrical outlets). Damn thing sounds like a Harrier jet landing. When I power it on, it dims the lights!!! MS Word never loaded quicker, although the palm pilot screen that I hook up to the server and use as a monitor is a wee bit undersized!

Does that include beer and smokeable house plants?
hahaha! no room for treats. funny thing about the story is the lan party was in my basement. yes, i loaded up my backpack with all my stuff, PUT IT ON MY SHOULDERS and walked down the stairs to the basement, where I promptly set everything up.

i'm debating whether or not to post pictures of my full backpack now, i fear my reputation has run down and joined the choir invisible
post #19 of 27
I'm so sorry to hear that. My i9300 weighs in at only 7lbs..
