Apple desktop question

I hope I can get an answer here even though it is about a desktop computer. My girlfriend has an Apple desktop computer, I don't know the model, but I think it is a emac, and I have a pc. The apple is about 3 years old so I don't think it has wireless capability, but I was wondering if I could get a wireless card for it and use a wireless router for my cable internet connection? Do all routers work with macs, because most of the ones I have seen only list Windows XP as system requirements. Thanks for any info and help you can give me!

You have to get an Airport card from Apple, you can't just use a wireless card from Best Buy or summat.

And yes, they will work with any router.

So I could get a usb wireless adapter and it will work for a mac? I saw one yesterday in best buy or somewhere and the system requirements only listed windows and did not mention Apple OS. Will it still work? Sorry about the dumb questions, but I know absolutely nothing about macs. Thanks.

There's a chance that it won't, but it should. OS X is much more able to plug and play than Windows.

Your best bet is to try to find an airport (not airport extreme) card on ebay. Apple's drivers only cover the chipsets they use, so it's very much hit and miss on third party adaptors.

Best thing to do is to buy the USB adaptor at Best Buy and try it out. If it doesn't work take it back before your time is up, tell them it isn't working and you want a refund. If they ask you if you want to exchange it just say you got another one and you just would like your money back.

possible solutions:

drivers look questionable. i'd want to call and see if 10.3.6+ and tiger are supported. also, is 11b. perfectly fine for basic networking, internet, small file sharing, and even audio streaming. if large files are in the mix as well as video streaming u'll want 11g.

this solution is a bit cheaper but is a bit bigger. since it connects to the ethernet port (she does have ethernet right?) there's no need for drivers. setting up the device will be done via a web interface.

hope these help.

ugh....isn't it 54g

54g is the marketing name for 802.11g technology (as 108g is for the "turbo" versions of the tech), which implies the theoretical thru rate of the wireless network. so, either/or is accurate.
