hehe called the shop today....they say it'll take a few more weeks..if it drags on any longer i might just get somethin else...dont know if this is accurate but the reseller said that a 40gig HD with a 256 ram and no O.S. might be in the range of $1200-$1400..i'm from the Philippines by the way so I can't say if it'll cost the same over there..

Yes, that's true, but the z70v isn't out until early August...whereas this one is out already.

I called iBuyPower & it seems they have this laptop in stock. It'd take 5-10 days to arrive at my door if I make an order. iBuyPower offers a 30-day money-back guarantee (minus the shipping, of course) if I'm not satisfied with the laptop. Now I'm really tempted to give this thing a test ride...

Who knows, this one might actually turn out good--if it's anything like the pictures..

Too bad the ASUS distributors here don't import anything higher than the M1...It's quite expensive here too. Z70v should cost something like 2750-3000US considering the cost of the lower end models available..

I wouldn't mind being the guinea pig, but the truth is, I don't really have much time at the moment to play around with this laptop even if I get it now , so I'm afraid it'd just sit there if I get it now. By the time I find time to play with it, the Asus z70v refresh would be out. I might as well just wait then...

I'd gladly play with it if you sent it to me!

ECS is sending me an evaluation unit, so I can be your guinea pig

Unfortunately, they did not have the x700 w/ 256MB model available, so I'll be testing out the x700 w/ 128MB.

YeeeEEHAOW!!

128MB is still mighty fine for a notebook video card, IMO. Make sure you post a good review with lots-o-pics and info!

i wouldn't even bother reviewing it. just send it along to me, don't waste your time.

I'm sure we'd all love that

damn thats purrrrdy. im in the same boat, about to buy a 3880, and now this. if it does indeed have the wsxga i MIGHT have to look into it. (build quality is oh so important however)
I can tell you right now it is NOT WSXGA+ but rather WXGA - fine for some people, but many prefer more screen real estate. I'm more interested in guaging performance and build quality. Also I'd like to see how their newer offerings are doing with regards to heat, a significant failing of the G556.

Dream on CoffeeShark - Nothing for JOO!

actually, i'm pretty interested in this review, i'm wondering if ECS is making a decent laptop these days.
Yah, same here. That's why I reached out to them. I'm hoping it proves itself to be a real gem. If indeed their build quality has improved, their new G910 might be a gaming monster. It's still a shame about the DDR 333 and, for some, the WXGA.

So?! Ya got it yet? Huh? Huh??

(I'm a tad over-eager )

Arrived yesterday. I have not yet had time to build as yet, however, my initial reaction on build quality: not impressed.

I have actually contacted ECS regarding the unit to determine from them if the issues I have with the build quality are to be expected or aberrations. Here is what I observed:

Though the system has a very stylish design, it is thoroughly constructed of plastic. This in and of itself is not an issue as many of the laptops we all love are made of plastic. What does concern me is the flex in the center/lower portion of the keyboard (between the trackpad and the middle of the keyboard). This results in a significant amount of vagueness when depressing the space bar and the keys in its immediate vicinity. Apparently, from my conversations with ECS this is being addressed. There is also a piece of plastic above the keyboard, effectively covering the LCD connections and the contacts for the quicklaunch buttons. It exhibits a bizarre "waviness" almost what you might expect from plastic that was left out in the hot sun. ECS has asked me to photograph this for their benefit.

The last issue relates to the hinges for the LCD. The design of this laptop is latchless and closing and opening the lid should be governed by the appropriate amount of resistance/tension in the hinges. However, upon closing the lid, when it is about 2-3" from shutting, it looses all tension and "slams" shut. ECS also assures me that this is not the norm and is supposed to get back to me with a fix.

As for performance, screen quality and all the other metrics, I cannot yet comment as I am awaiting the components I selected to test it out (arrival on 8/4 - Pentium M 750 + 60GB Hitachi 7K60 which I will mate with 1GB of DDR 333 - the G600 has integrated WiFi).

As soon as I have her up and running I will have more information for those interested.

Wow! Thanks for the info, Unleaded. Unfortunately, unless ECS seriously addresses (and actually fixes) these problems with build quality and LCD closure, I'm sorry to say that I'm not very interested in this unit as I was initally. I find most ECS notebooks to have O-K build quality, but terriblely cheap-feeling keyboards.

Can you post some actual pictures so we can see something other than those over-glamorized stock photos? Thanks!
