XPS + World of Warcraft = Random reset??

Thread Starter
Sorry for creating a post with such a threatening topic.

I am seriously considering getting the XPS Gen 2 for my gaming need. At this moment, I play only two games -- World of Warcraft (WoW) and Warcraft III (Yes, Blizzard fan here). I have been reading the forum for the last few weeks and occasionally I saw posts saying that their XPSs reset with WoW after xx minutes.

I would like to find out if this happens at some point to all XPS owners who play WoW? If so, what did you do to remedy the problem?

I play these games exclusively so I would definitely not get the XPS if the reset is proven to be a hardware problem (i.e. not software, not environment (ventilation)).

Thanks in advance!

PS: I did search in the forum but couldn't find a conclusion if the reset problem (if at all) can be workaround.

Well I have a 9300 and have had no probs with it. Runs at full detail settings as well.

Alot of people experiment with non-DELL video drivers, it could be the cause. When I had the regular drivers, WoW ran solid. I since changed them and haven't noticed any stability problems yet.

Actually, it could be something so stupid and simple like the wireless antenna touching the copper GPU heatpipe. I noticed this in my system when the tech came to replace my screen. Then experienced game crashing especially quickly if working on the wireless connection. Yesterday I openned up my XPS2 and re-ran the antenna wire so it's behind an LCD connector and so far no crashing. Part of the antenna wire had become exposed it seems and now there's a good centimeter of distance between it and the copper heat pipe. However, I have NOT had the time to do thurough testing on this so it might not be a fix. However, it would explain the sensitivity of this system when playing games over the wireless.

9300. No resets, two hard crashes to the desktop.

First one was due to falling through the world and then seeing some really freaky shit (almost like artifacts),

Second one was due to the instance server on WoW crashing, leading to everyone disconnecting in the instance, in a most despicable manner.

Neither can be contributed to the 9300 I have. God bless Dell.

Never had a problem

I have an XPS 2 with stock drivers for everything. I got a few random resets during WoW shortly after installing it, and later after changing some video settings. I had one or two more later on, but it seems as though opening the window or propping up the back of the notebook for ventilation fixes the problem, as I've never had a reset unless I had the windows closed and no propping. WoW is the only game that is affected by this.

It's also worth noting that I was using BIOS version A01 during all of the resets. Since upgrading to A02, I haven't had a single problem with any game but BF2, which locked up my computer once (BF2 doesn't use resources very efficiently it seems). BF2 has some bad coding though...but damn it sure is fun on those 64 player servers.

Yup, the only time I had any problems was when I upgraded my RAM from 1GB to 2GB---but now its settled down and it is working great. Maybe it is because I am running all stock drivers and factory installed software and OS--I did clean out some of the unneeded programs. I recommend the XPS Gen2 for gaming online and specially for WoW. Have fun!!!

WoW sometimes stutters on my comp probably because of only 512 MB Ram. BF2 though is a complete mess.

I've had my XPS2 reboot on me several times.
Apparently it's caused by video drivers overheating the computer.
(Experimenting with non-Dell drivers is just that...experimenting)

Sticking with the Dell video drivers will keep the machine solid.

I had a few random resets in WoW with the non-Dell laptop2go 77.30 drivers (some in game and at least once while quitting WoW). The Blue Screen specifically mentioned an error in one of the nvidia dlls. I haven't bothered to try different driver versions because these drivers work well for other games (like BF2).

Anyway, what I did was 'disable V-sync' and disable 'use desktop gamma' in the game video settings. I also tried disabling 'hardware cursor.' I haven't had a reset since.
