Ferrari 4005WLMi vs. Asus Z70V Refresh (College Decision Help)

Hi all,

Im ordering my laptop for college that i would preferably like to last 2 years (being able to play games that come out in that period as well) and it cant be a desktop replacement. Originally i was going to wait until mid to late july to order my laptop, but since the release of the Z70V refresh and it being possibly limited release with internal bluetooth i have pushed that date forward. Right now the debate is between Ferrari 4005WLMi and Asus Z70V Refresh, both would be pretty much max specced (i have $2500 to spend). My question for you guys is, are there any others that should be in consideration (preferably no Dell listings plz). Is there anything i should know about either of these laptops that might sway me towards one or the other? I know they both run on different processors, and that can be big but the only thing ive seen from the tests is marginal differences.

Anyways, as shown by these two laptops, im looking for something that weighs less than 6.5 pounds (want to keep it portable), wont burn me (i am heavily considering buying one of those laptop coolers, so that will probably help), has at least 128 mb dedicated video card, good build quality, etc.

thanks for all your help guys, sorry to throw this at you so soon, but need to pre-order the z70V refresh soon if im going to get it.

the M6V is ultra sexy the ferarri uses an "in your face" color scheme, i dont like my laptops to have red black yellow and the rest of the rainbow on the cover.

Well it took almost a month since official release for the Ferrari to begin getting into people's hands, so being almost July I'd be a little nervous about getting the laptop in time for the school year, but that all depends on when your school starts and how on-the-ball Asus is. Personally, I like to see some initial reviews and such before I buy, so that's why I got the f4k instead of waiting. (it's also my first windows-based comp so I want/need the extra time to acclimate)

Since you want to keep it for atleast 2 years, if you can afford it, go for the Ferrari 4000. It's 6.3lbs and has a very high clocked X700 (beats Acer TM 8104, in Games, PCMark04, 3DMark03). Plus you can play around with 64-bit windows and programs/games as you wish.

To me the decision was simple:

High-clocked X700 --> Unsure of clock of X700
Carbon Fiber Weave top --> Carbon Fiber Composite
Slot Load DVD Burner --> Tray Load DVD Burner
Fast 64-bit Processor --> Fast 32-bit Processor
3-4 Hours Battery Life --> 3.5 - 4.5 Hours Battery Life

is the ferrari as user upgradeable as the Asus though?
I know on the Asus you can swap out the CPU, Hard Drive, and Ram.

curved keyboard -> normal keyboard
sparkles screen(from tummy a z71v+ferrari user) -> non sparkle screen (from the x600 version of the z70v) (make or break here)?
non-customizable -> fully customizable

i have to say i give the edge the z70v.. i actually like the z70v look more.. more conservative... i'm not sure about the acer components (HD,ram) but you are guranteed for high quality for the asus b/c you choose the componenents.. thats always a plus..

and like sum1 said.. the ferrarri has the same screen as the z71v.. and z70v definetly has a better one. (from resellers)

why ferrari?
- turion 64bit
- high clocked x700
- ferarri look
why z70v
- the screen
- asus mobo and other high quality components
- matured centrino

Banned Ninja forgot the mention that the Ferrari may have a sparkle screen :/

Wouldn't someone have said that by now? Especially those few people who already have it... I haven't heard them say it only people who haven't already gotten said that it would have the same exact screen as Z71V.

i'm surprised soo few ppl have it .. and theres only like 3 reviews around the acer section..
the screen looks nice from screenshots. but you can't tell by the sparkles especially if you are on a z71v already..

I heard the sparkling problem was vastly overrated and isn't even noticeable unless you look for it.

well i have the z71v.. you will get used to it..
but it takes time to get used to.. some people will never get over it
i my choice was down to the sparkle or no sparkle.. i would take the no-sparkle instantly.. to me the ferrari and the z70v-refresh is pretty much like that..

I emailed istnc about the limited release thing and they said "Contrary to what has been mentioned, this is not a limited edition notebook, they simply wil not be coming in large qtys." So if this is true then you could still probably wait, I think that's what I'm going to do.

I remember rick saying that while it might not be a limited release, the ones with internal bluetooth might be.

Considering you have that much money to fully spec out, I would buy based on aesthetic appeal (looks). At this point in time, the 64-bit properties of the Turion won't really be too prominently taken advantage of yet, so it's on an even playing field with Pentium-M.

In any case, they're bound to perform similarly.
