Acer Ferrari 4000 and Linux/Unix? Anyone try it? - Page 5

Lissimore,

I used your second method to set up SUSE 9.3 on my computer (installing the 2.6.13_rc3 kernel). Everything worked find up until the point where I tried to install the fglrx64 driver. (Just before the patches). When I tried to install it I got the following message:
"Failed dependencies.
fglrx conflicts with fglrx64_6_8_0-8.14.12-1.x86_4"

Any idea what's happening and how I can solve this problem?

how do load the new bios update if i dont windows installed and a floppy drive? running linux here..

There's a dos version of the install utility at the address that Lissmore gave above. Do you have access to another computer running DOS/Windows with a CD-Burner? Maybe you could make a DOS boot CD-Rom with the new bios also on the CD? Then boot up in DOS from the CD-ROM, run the utility to flash the bios and then reboot to Linux?

Where is this conflict coming from ? Are you using an rpm for installing the driver ? ... I have avoided the fglrx rpms ... and gone directly with the ati installer ....

If it is an rpm file conflict error ... remove the old driver ....

rpm -e fglrx64

and try it again ... or use the ati installer since that is what worked for me :-)

I've got a dual boot system ... (Not by choice .. work requires winblows)
There are a couple of solutions for a Linux only system ...

Create a bootable usb stick ... and boot from that
(at least I believe the 4000 bios will permit this)
Create a DOS bootable cd-rom on a CD-RW containing the bios update...
Create a Windows Bootable CD-ROM ( ala BartPE )
... and load the bios and bios writer via usb stick

Last but not least ( and most risky ) FreeBios has a linux flash utility

See http://wiki.clug.org.za/clugwiki/ind...ng_under_Linux
for a summary of some methods ... and suggestions.

What's your bluetooth setup like ? I assume the "bluetooth - perfect" implies that your bluetooth mouse is working well. Just curious. I can't use my bluetooth at work (Wireless device security restrictions) ... but would like to at least get it working at home.

well the latest BIOS i saw less ACPI error in my dmesg although the "Error: Looking up [Z00I] in namespace" message is still there.
And my clock still run twice faster than it should be *scratches head*

Lissimore,

I would like to know if you can double click in xmms browser window ...what i mean is: in xmms browser window, you r looking for a music file to play can you double click and change directory? also in the xmms playlist window can u double click the music file so t can start playing?

neither of the these things will respond unless i use the enter key to change directory or play the music file...

i am using the xorg.conf file from the post...

Ah! That's the problem! For some reason I thought the patches only worked with the fglrx.

Thanks again!

Might not be the same case but I recall i had trouble double-clicking (i was using gnome) and i solved it by increasing Double Click timeout in Mouse preferences from 0.2 sec to 0.8 sec.

i have the EXACT same problem with double clicking, it ****ed up because the laptop runs too fast, so what u have to do is set the time in ur xorg file. but even at that ur double click has to be perfect. i just set mine really low. works for everything else BUT xmms.

Has anybody emailed acer tech support about the 4000 running too fast?

Just an update -
I loaded the bios update listed earlier in this thread, and I can now install Suse without any issues (before it hung hard on the first install screen). Thanks for posting all of the help here.

Try making a dos booting BIOS flash CD on a CD-RW ...

http://www.biosflash.com/e/bios-boot-cd.htm

Works like a charm ... even when creating the cd image under linux...

I assume by "running to fast" you mean that the clock tick rate is double what it should be ... (at least under linux anyway ).

I posted directions on how to fix the clock doublling under Linux a while ago. With the kernel 2.6.13 it's even easier ... just add no_timer_check as a kernel param in /boot/grub/menu.lst ...

Have you put in the timer hack ... to stop the clock tick interupt from being counted twice?

If you haven't, put it in, you will likely find that some of your timing problems get fixed ... including keyboard repeat rates ... and most mouse clicking problems.

Lissimore you rock!
That no_timer_check sure does the trick!
Thanks again for your tips, please keep em coming.
