CD/DVD issues with SUSE 9.3

Thread Starter
I've just finished installing SUSE 9.3 on my M70. Everything seems to have gone perfectly well except for the couple of errors that cjcox noted in his SUSE install write up. The problem I'm having (the same encountered by cjcox) is that the CD/DVD drive shows up, but it's not functional.

I'm trying to follow the fix on cjcox's guide, but whenever I try to use KWrite to change the line storage.media_check_enabled to "true" in the storage-policy.fdi file in /usr/share/hal/fdi/90defaultpolicy, I get an error message saying that I don't have write access to the file.

Unfortunately cjcox's guide doesn't get into the details of editing the values, and since I'm a complete and total n00b at all things linux, I really have no idea what to do. If anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Also, has anyone else had this CD/DVD issue with the M70 and SUSE 9.3? Everything else has worked fine, just this one last problem. Anyway, thanks in advance for you advice.

Edit the file as root.

Since you seem more comfortable with the GUI editors, just login as the root user. That was the first password you had to enter during the install (it told you not to forget it). Root is like Administrator (to the extreme) on Linux.

Oh.. I freely admit, getting SUSE on the M70 is NOT for newbies... my write up helps.. but it does assume that you are already familiar with making tweaks to get things to work right on Linux.

Don't start X as root if you are plugged into the internet. Start it as a regular user and then enter the command

to get root access (you have to enter your root password you defined during the install). Then you will have to manually edit the configuration file with a text editor. I like vim, but anyone editor should work.

It seems the individual is used to using the graphical editors.

If he has a router/firewall... should be fine.

Login as root and make your system work... then learn about the proper techniques.
