Hi there

Got a problem with my Z71v - I think I fried my vid card. Is this the right place to post a help request?

Basically, I was playing Prince of Persia and the system completely froze up (had to hard reset). When it restarted the Windows logo appeared, but there are weird vertical lines through the display. After the Windows logo the screen went blacl and wouldn't recover. I restarted in Safe mode and got into my desktop, and after fooling around a little I disabled the GeForce adapter. Now I can start up normally, but I am stuck with the graphics from Safe mode, and there are still lines in the display. Is there any way to replace the vid card if it is fried, or does it require a whole new motherboard? Is there somewhere I can buy the Mobo without replacing the whole unit?

The video card is replaceable on its own. You don't need a new motherboard. I'd suggest talking to the reseller you bought the notebook from to see if you can get a replacement. Asus' e-store is currently only selling the 64 MB version of the Z71v graphics card, which would entail a performance hit from the 128 MB version that most people have.

Well, I'm not having a good year. My monitor has cracked and along several of the crack lines there is black (LCD fluid?) leaking under the screen. In the event it gets worse and I can no longer see anything on the monitor, what are my options for replacement? Anyone have an idea of cost, time, and/or suggested repair locations with contact numbers/email addresses? I'm in North Carolina, but bought mine via online order from a place in California (RJTech, I think). I'm looking for somewhere convenient and relatively reasonable in price vs. buying a whole new notebook.

FYI - there are 3 or 4 Z71v LCD screens selling on Ebay for about $200 (plus shipping). I am NOT one of the sellers; just letting you know

Hi guys, I remember solving this problem before, but I forgot how. My computer turns on automatically, it's something with the wireless, could someone help me out?

I have the exact same problem as you. I get green vertical lines when booting into windows and on my desktop. I've tried almost every nvidia driver but all cuase a blue screen of death when booting into windows. I did find a temporary solution that will allow you to use your laptop at a comfortable resolution and color setting... Google Mepis, its a linux distro, and try out the live cd feature to see if it works for you. Its an alternative if your not in a hurry to replace your card. I've been running it like this for 3 months and its okay as long as I dont run any 3d programs. You can get a replacement card at asus estore but they are not accepting orders at the moment so you really have no other options unless you can find a reseller who still has these cards in stock.

THANK YOU so much, Muhaha - I really appreciate the tip. Now, I have NO experience with Linux at all. I looked at DLing Mepis from their site, but it looks like an ISO file. DO I have to load that into Daemon Tools or Alcohol or something like that? Is setting it up fairly straightforward or do I need to read up on it somewhere? Mepis, like Ubuntu (the version of Linux I use), needs to be burned to a CD. The ISO is the CD image, and you can use Nero to burn it. After you've burned the CD, restart the computer and hit F2 to go to the BIOS menu. change the boot order so the computer boots from the DVD drive first, and then save your changes. it should then boot from the CD, and the OS will start. It may take a while to get going, as it is figuring out what it needs to run on your system. Once it starts, your graphics card will be enabled again and running. Then you can play around with it and decide if you like it or not. If you do, you can install it to your hard drive, and f you don't or you want to get more experience with it first, you can continue using the CD (or if you don't like it, you can throw it away!), and it won't make any changes to your system.

Ok I loaded Mepis and it seems to be working great - will take some time to get used to a new OS, as well as OpenOffice (but it looks great anyway). The only real problem I have now is figuring out how to connect through my wireless card. Anyone know of any simple newbie step-by-step guides on how to do that? I had Windows managing the wireless controller, and now I can't see where to even begin setting it up in Mepis. Either way, thanks again for the tip - my comp is operational again.

One more question - any idea why I don't have the same graphics problems in Linux as I do in Windows? Is it genuinely a hardware problem with the card or is it some software issue?

I am led to believe that it is a hardware issue because these graphical artifacts show up in the BIOS screen. Also if you remove your hard drive you will still see these lines when the centrino logo shows up and on the boot screens. The Linux drivers are different from the windows ones, that may be the reason why we dont see the same graphical problems - exaclty how they are different? Your guess is as good as mine...

Ok, I am giving this some serious consideration as it is 1/3 the price of having someone else do it, not to mention the time savings of shipping, etc.

Anyone have any pics or other instructions on how to replace the LCD?

Would you recommend that a novice such as I -NOT- try it?

Do I need any special tools?

Also, my current screen is WSXGA, but this ebay seller indicates a WUXGA is available. Any thoughts or considerations on this? Thanks! (this forum is awesome!)

text will be smaller on WUXGA, which would be a detriment for me, but that's your call. I think WSXGA+ is just about perfect in size.

Go to My Network Places>View Network Connections
Right click local area connection>Properties
Click Configure
Select Advanced Tab
Click Wake Up Capabilities and choose "off" for its value

Ok, I decided to try it. (Thanks Djembe, for your links as well!). $217, including shipping. The Ebay seller for the LCD was Bliss Computers out of New Jersey. Excellent customer service and shipping speed. I would recommend them for anyone else wanting to do this. It took me less than an hour to do the LCD change. The new one works great. I decided to stick with the WXSGA+ resolution as Bliss could not guarantee compatibility with a WUXGA screen.


Thanks again for all the info.

Now if I could just get my boot time and sound isuues resolved without a complete re-install ...
