The Unofficial Asus Z71V Support Thread - Page 4

Okay, two things. Are the 300/600 overclocks stable? I just ordered the z71v (yay!), and I want to be able to max out the settings without destroying the card. I also asked for AC5 to be put on the GPU in addition to the CPU, but no word on this yet. I also noticed somebody clocking the mem to 700, and he seemed to be swiftly reprimanded.

So 300/600 is the recommended setting? With the addition of your beloved AC5, can I hope to go higher? Or will that just damage things. :x

Secondly, I just wanted to comment on your initial comparison between the z71v and the Toshiba. Interestingly enough, the card used in Toshiba is the 6600 TE, which is severely underclocked for some reason. Don't know if this was considered, and I have no idea if the TE is just an underclocked version of the 6600. Anyhow, great tips! Thread is definitely bookmarked and will be the first thing loaded on the laptop when it comes in.

I haven't try any higher than 300/600.

But I've left it at 300/600 to play EQ2 for about a week. It worked fine for me. I lower it down afterwards because I haven't been playing much game.

I stay around 275/550 now constantly..

I am pondering about a mod I haven't had a chance to try. I saw at Fry's Electronic they sell a thermal ICE pad, for approx 24.99. It is 4.5mm thick. When it is plug in, one side become ice cold while the other side releases the heat.

It is recommended to be place between the cpu and heatsink/fan. I am pondering about it fitting between the GPU/heatsink. That might work better than AC5 if it fits.

*shrug*

Y'know what's odd?

Switched my graphics card to 250/500 in preparation for taking this baby straight to the tech support.

I then went and played two and a half hours of Half-Life 2 before it crashed, since when it's been running fine (including running an entire 3dmark2001 test, and it was crashing a LOT at LOWER frequencies.)

...I hate computers.

I have a HyperSonic Aviator MX6 (Asus Z71V), and I just thought I would post this fix in case anyone has this particular problem with this machine. After performing a clean install with all drivers installed, I noticed that my machine was stuck in PIO mode for the optical drive instead of Ultra DMA 2 like it should. I was getting choppy digital CD playback and choppy DVD playback. Even with the "DMA if available" setting chosen under both Device 0 (hard disk) and Device 1 (optical drive) under the Primary IDE Channel properties, the optical drive was stuck in PIO mode. The hard disk was fine showing Ultra DMA Mode 5.

In any case, if you are having this problem, here is a simple fix: Delete the following registry key and reboot: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0001\SlaveIdDataCheckSum

This allows it to reset itself, and you will then notice it will now use Ultra DMA Mode 2 like it should.

Hope this helps any other out there with this problem.

ONe thing that's really been bothering me about the Z71v is that it gets very hot around the touchpad... I wonder, has anyone tried putting some kind of buffer under the casing or what? And the laptop gets fairly hot on my lap... I don't remember many people commenting on this. Is this normal? It appears to be the GPU...

Man sure you are not too overclocking your GPU...also, have proper ventilation for the laptop so heat doesn't get build up.

I was playing guildwars for 3 hours yesterday on my lap, it was fine. Heat is not a big issue with Z71V. That is one of their nice remarks bonus people gives about this laptop.
Right now, I have the edge of the back propped up against my leg to keep the GPU off my leg. It literally is hot enough to burn... I take it its the GPU since its in the center and to the back (near the screen side).

So far, the heat has been a problem. Could it be something with POwer4Gear? The only 3 things I can set it to are Super Performance, High Performance, and Presentation... I don't think it touches the GPU, does it? I even lowered nVidia's performace to "Balanced" on AC. Either way, its set to "No Overclocking." Argh! Also, just out of curiosity, how do you guys get the processor down so low? Even with AS5 applied, and the processor cut down to 800mhz with .700V, it still runs around 50-51*C. I've seen people with much lower...

Also, still doesn't explain the heat! Argh...

EDIT: Is it possible to force the fans to stay on? Or run at certain speeds? Also, the "Aux" temperature sensor (which I'm told is for the power) is at 67*C. Could this be the problem? Like I said, I'm running off the plug... plus, it doesn't seem to matter what temperature the processor is at, it seems fairly hot whether it be at 50*C at 800mhz, or 57*C at 1.86ghz.

By the way, what are the three fans? The CPU fan is obvious, but what is the chassis fan? There's also a third fan, but I don't remember what it was called...

EDIT AGAIN: One odd thing, the temperature of the processor doesn't really change whether its on my leg or sitting on a flat surface with perfect ventilation. However, when I first start the computer, it usually starts out around 40*C, but quickly rises.
WEll, I just opened it up and was planning on trying the FSB thing... until I realized I couldn't. I DID however, look at the processor... the AS5 that came with the laptop had been squished out either side of the chip, so it was almost bare! I took a razor, scrapped it off the edges and reapplied it. Its not as much as I would have liked (it sticks badly), but right now I'm at 800mhz on my lap and I've watched it drop from 51 to 47 while sitting on my lap. Usually it hardly ever dropped below 50...

Anyways, has anybody tried applying AS5 to the GPU? I checked the distance between the GPU and the heatsink, and it seems to almost be touching. Unfortunately, its hard to tell... anybody have a good way? WHat I did was take the little pad they have already, place it on top of the GPU, put a little dab of spit on the top (so it'd stick easier), and then lightly placed the heatsink unit on top. Without even pushing down on the screw areas, it picked up the little pad. Keep in mind, on mine, the pads are probably about a millimeter thick... the one on the chipset is even thinner than the one on the GPU.

Smilepak, what about that Thermal pad you were talking about? I wouldn't mind trying it... about the GPU, though. If I did just get some AS5 and try that, should I just apply it on the GPU itself? I take it I should leave the memory banks alone... I ask because somebody was talking about how it didn't actually make contact with the memory itself.

Oh, and where exactly would the thermal pad plug into? And how big is it? I can't seem to find it...

holy hell smilepak, that is one nice post up there. maybe u should separate that into a sticky or something. it'd be useful to all the new z71v owners or prospective owners.

That post is a duplicate of the first post in the thread. Smilepak posted it as the start of a separate sticky, and I merged it with the original thread to avoid confusion.

Asus Z71V Official Support Site

those links to the audio drivers don't work anymore. arrrrghhhh. And now I can't find what audio driver I need..... from realtek or asus or whatever it was before. I just removed the drivers so I could then download the updated one, but the link is broken. Man this sux. Could you please help????
The server that contains Asus' Z71v support info is down for the time being, so you can't access it. Until it gets back up, I'd suggest reinstalling the audio drivers on your driver cd. Sorry! Asus makes great products, but their web site management skills are nonexistant.

Ok, wait a second......

I was about to buy a laptop (still trying to figure out if wxga vs wxga+ is better) and finding all these bare bone mobiles have me excited...

WOW.

Ok, but what about the displays???? For example, Toshiba has a nice gloss display, are all these manufactures (if for example selling the Aus 71V use the same display?

My primary use will be for music, have heard/read the clevo are supposed to be good.....seems I could save a bundle by building it myself....

guess I won't be buying right away as now I found these barebone websites..

ugggggggggggggg....thinking for music, not sure what display works the best, there where some cautions on PCIexpress eating up bandwidth and bad bad bad for audio/video use, but it seems the Go 6600 series tied with Intel 915 may work, it's basically AMD laptops bad for audio work if using PCI express....whereas AGP nforce3/AMD64 wins hands down, but that's a different subject.

Do a lot of people build these? I've build plenty of systems......DAW, so am curious.....also, wondering if it would be better to buy the Barebones from some of these vendors than use pricewatch or newegg for the other parts.

Some basic questions...what DDR goes in a Z71V, HD form factor, and doesnt the motherboard include wireless LAN? One bare bone said it was an additional $$$.

Thanks, excited...sorry for all the questions..

FWIW, my LCD is 17" at 1280x1024 and I don't find this hard to use, so am not sure if WXGA+ would or would NOT be a problem, however, I do like the GLOSS look of the TOSHIBA....and do any of these barebones offer similar displays? http://www.rjtech.com/ or other vendors?

Thanks again!
