I know there are tons of threads about "what should I buy?" but none of them really fit my choices. Here's what I'm trying to decide between:

Alienware Sentia
Asus Z70v (regular and refresh)
Asus Z71v
Dell 700m

All with:
1.8-2.0 processor
1-1.25gb ram (if Dell, aftermarket ram)
60-80gb hard drive
dvd burner
XP pro

The laptop will be used almost completely for college with lots of internet use and some music/video stuff (nothing major, just personal collection organization and iPod stuff.) Very little (if any) gaming. I really think I'd like a lightweight 12" laptop better so that I could easily carry it everywhere with me, but I'm also thinking about getting a palm pilot with wireless, making a 15" laptop more of a possibility. All of my choices are very close in price, so just recommend based on which is the better system, not price. I'd sorta like the Z70v refresh, but it would have to be REALLY worth waiting for cause I'd like to have it soon (not august or whenever). Also, what about price drops in processors? I've heard prices drop sometime in july... worth waiting for?

if you do little or no gaming.. there is no point for the z71v..
check out the smaller asus like the z63a (w3v with integrated video card) or the w5a
i think the z70v might be a bit big... but it seems like 1 awsome notebook

One thing I forgot... I'd really like WSXGA screen. Definitely widescreen, anyway.

I'd say go for the Dell. The other systems don't seem worth it, unless you want to wait for the z70v. Or, you could try a Dell 6000, if you want the 15". I'd try Dell for your PDA, too. Their Axims are crazy nice.

W3V.

Or if you stick to 12"... the Dell 700m all the way.

eeeeeeh.... That 6000 wasn't all that great. What I didn't like is that you had to buy the notebook around their schedual, and even then I couldn't configure a puter that I wanted. Personal experience i guess....

Well, if you need it right away, I guess the only option is to buy from a store. Whatever you like, man.

I don't need it right away, I'd just like to order sometime soon so that I won't have to worry about it being here before classes start. My friend just got a Dell 6000 with 1.6 processor and we added a 1gb stick of transcend RAM (from newegg). It's still crazy slow and it's got all kinds of Dell junk loaded onto it. That's really the main thing that's turned me against dell. I really like the sentia and will most likely get it, just wanna know if there are any better choices. I hadn't even heard of asus before these forums, which is why I'm sorta shaky about my decision now.

If you are leaning towards the Alienware Sentia, I would look into the Uniwill 223II. It is the OEM of the Sentia, and will be much cheaper (saving you money for better upgrades). I owned the 223II and loved everything about it, but realized I wanted a gaming notebook. The 223II is a well built lappy, and will handle everything you describe.

You can get these as barebones or through companies such as : Cyberpower and IBuyPower
